have been accepted to emory which was my dream school and I got the financial aid but I am not sure if I received a good aid .
My parents’ income is about 55k and my parents expected contribution came out as 10k.
Plus my work study is 2500 and my other student loans are about 5000… However my parents cannot pay 10k a year for my education . So I guess by the end of my 4 years I would be in about 50-60k in debt … Did I not receive a generous package? I honestly am not sure …
If you’re majoring in math/CS/business/etc… 60k will take <5 years after graduation to pay off. Definitely worth it.
If you’re getting an English degree… while Emory’s English department is excellent, I would not recommend anyone with financial resources to go into 60k in debt for it.
If your parents’ after tax income is 55k, I think expecting them to pay 10k is reasonable… It might require minor lifestyle changes, but it’s less than 20% of what they make… College is a business, too - education isn’t supposed to be free.
I think what you received is fair, but whether or not you received a “generous” package depends on what other schools offered you.
To reduce debt, you can graduate early, work during the summers, work during the school year, etc.
@gminor @Jillib I got an Emory Liberal Arts Scholarship of 20k but I also applied for need based financial aid and still waiting for some extra aid. Nothing yet. What about you guys? (I’m an international student <100k and persuing a degree in the english department, so yeah, I don’t really feel like taking up a big loan)
You are probably missing some document. Check OPUS and/or call the financial aid office and see what’s wrong. I got my package and email on March 30. Congrats on the scholarship though
@couplemoreweeks Yes but it was sent to the address identified as the “permanent” address on the common app instead of the address identified as the “current” address on the common app.
