hi!! i applied ed to emory and i’m really excited because it’s my top choice school and i hope i get in lol. anyways i had a question for current emory students: how are the language classes there? specifically russian, mandarin, persian, & portuguese? i’m serbian and i speak it so i was thinking about taking russian since they’re both slavic languages but i also really like mandarin as a language and persian sounds interesting to me and portuguese is just cool lol. can you fit two different languages in your schedule if you double major?? like let’s say i want to double major in linguistics and media studies. would i be able to fit both russian and persian (or any of the other languages i’m interested in)?? i just really wanna take at least two of them
Hi! The language classes at Emory are pretty good in my opinion. The professors here usually give you weekly online homework, which helps you learn a lot pretty quickly. I know that there are classes for Russian, Mandarin and Portuguese. I am not sure if they teach Persian here, though. Anyways, it is really easy to fit as many languages as you want in your schedule because they take place at different times. As part of Emory’s General Education Requirements you only have to take one language class for two semesters (for instance French 101 and 102). But, if you want to take more language classes than that, it is fine and will probably already count towards your major.
Yes, Persian is offered in addition to Modern Greek, Spanish, Arabic, Russian, French, Chinese, Japanese, Hindi, Tibetan, German, Portuguese, and Italian. I might have missed a couple. All of those courses go from level 100 to 400. In addition, students can elect to take languages through a different system called “Structured independent learning” http://languagecenter.emory.edu/home/sils-program/
In this, you can take courses like Turkish or Swahili that are not offered by the University.
If you major in Linguistics and Media, you can’t also pick up a third major or minor. There is a Spanish Linguistics major that you could complete in addition to a media major. You can definitely take multiple languages but be smart about planning them and working up to the level you want. I myself have been able to take lots of Spanish classes though it is not my major. Good luck!
