Emory or Northwestern ED?

Goddamn, I am indecisive as Hell… Even if you look at my other threads I seemed to have totally convinced myself that I wanted to go to Emory ED.

Northwestern is more or a “dream” school. while Emory is a school I really really really really really LOVE. In fact, I decided for months that I would apply to Emory ED after visiting and loving it. I just FELT like I would really fit in at Emory. However, my entire life I always wanted to live in Chicago… Atlanta just doesn’t have the same appeal… There’s this burning hunger…

Problem is, supposedly when Northwestern says that they “recommend” subject test scores, it looks bad not to send them unless you are lower income. I did extremely poorly on my SAT subject tests. 690 on US History and 640 on Eng Lit. I can’t retake it before the ED deadline… After seeing these scores I was incredibly surprised to see that I got 5’s on AP US History and English Language with a 4 on Psychology…I honestly have no idea how it is possible for me to get a 5 on the AP Test that SHOULD be more difficult than the all-multiple-choice subject tests…

My GPA/Class Rank is mediocre,especially for an asian (3.68/Top 11%) but I have decent test scores ( 2210/32 ACT)

Northwestern is a reach, while Emory is sort of a low match. If you see my stats, pretty much my ONLY shot at Northwestern is through Early Decision. I frankly have no shot RD. I seem to have a very solid shot Emory ED and a semi-decent shot RD.

Another detrimental factor is that I don’t really have demonstrated interest for NU… I visited Chicago / the campus once but I never had a formal tour because I was a dumb freshman who didn’t know what he was doing. Plus, I live all the way in Texas and I have been unable to attend the recent local info sessions because of other important obligations.

My internal conflict is whether I should apply to this school or Emory ED… I know I have a basically ZERO shot RD and a mediocre shot ED. I love Emory a lot, but Chicago/Evanston >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Atlanta/Duluth.

Do you think it’s worth taking the shot at NU? I would rather get accepted to Emory ED ( a school I love and I KNOW is an amazing fit for me ) and be finished with this damn process than get rejected from Northwestern ED and Emory RD… Should I just apply Emory ED instead?

If the only reason you want to apply to NU is for Chicago, you have your answer----Emory ED. You have your whole life to live in Chicago. The adcoms at NU have a way of sniffing out those that are interested in NU solely because of its location. They want the kids who love everything the school has to offer and its location is simply the icing on the cake. This was abundantly clear at our information session.

Ed is a pretty big leg up at both, but it sounds like Emory is the right school for you. Go to NU or UC for grad school…?

and then Emory ED II

FYI NU is not in Chicago, it’s a good half hour or more north, and Emory isn’t really in Atlanta, it’s about 15 minutes east. It’s easier to get into Chicago from NU than from Emory into ATL, but i don’t think students from either one spend much time in either city.

Since you say you love NU because you want to live in Chicago, just know Evanston is not Chicago.

As he visited both schools, I think he must have a sense of where they are located. I also think he has a solid shot at emory ED as long as he has good extra-curriculars.

Having lived in both cities, Emory is more a part of Atlanta than Northwestern is part of Chicago.

If NU is the OP’s “dream” school, she should ED there.
