I know this is going to be a biased discussion, but I just want to get some opinions. If I get in from the waitlist to NYU, and I'm already accepted to Emory, where should I go? I want to do biology/pre-med, and Emory costs 40 grand a year

If Emory costs 40 grand a year, I can almost assure you that you will be paying MORE than that at NYU. NYU is notorious for having awful financial aid, and Emory's a much better school for pre-med anyway. This is a no-brainer, unless you REALLY like NYC.

Hey yeah I say go to Emory....If I', correct I believe they have a better science program. This is coming from a current NYU student who pays 50 grand a year. I'm actually looking into transferring into Emory because NYU is HORRIBLE with financial aid...I mean one of the worst schools. I come from a middle class family and they still expect me to pay 45 grand a year....guess what I can't so now I'm leaving. The city is great...but u honestly need to be one of those people who love the city to enjoy it. Aside from the ridiculous prices in New York, and the horrible financial aid it's great. Not much of a community experience though. Bottom line NYU is the opposite of Emory. U pretty much like one or the other.

have u visited both schools?

I am pretty familiar with Emory, and I like it there - problem is, people say that it is way too expensive for being a "second-tier school" and it's not AS exciting as NYU would be! I would love to be in NYC, plus two of my close friends are going to NYC for college ( one Columbia, one NYU) so I would definitely have a blast there! :( I miss NY

I am also considering GA Tech, the plus is that it's extremely cheap compared to Emory and NYU, but on the minus side, I have absolutely no interest in the school whatsoever, and I heard that the biology department sucks

Emory is "second-tier", but NYU is "third-tier"....

that's interesting...I always thought that Emory and NYU were compared at the same level

2nd tier? they are both first tier schools

what is considered a first-tier, second-tier, etc school?

First tier is the highest ranked 100 or so schools. Emory has a much better pre-med program, hands down. It is also higher ranked as a College over NYU.

NYU is in the middle of NYC; have you visited Emory? It has a C-A-M-P-U-S!

NYU is a great school, but much better as a Grad option than Undergrad. You also have the CDC, Children's, and Emory Healthcare all right here.

NYU also has alot of students, while Emory is a smaller, more intimate and academic setting.

I agree with dell123, unless you absolutely love NYU don't go...it's not worth the money. Again I go to NYU right now and I can just feel the debt creeping up. Whatever choice you make, make sure it's right for you. And Emory is way higher in the ratings I think it's number 17 in the country while NYU is number 33 or 35.

Emory University is a first tier school even when broken down by department in my opinion. NYU is world class for Tisch & Stern and probably first tier for the rest. Two very different environments offering substantially different lifestyles.

I dunno if I have to pay 40 grand for Emory I'm going to be in serious debt too, not to mention that I plan to go to med school...

should I go to GA Tech? I really don't want to, even though it's cheaper...it's bio/pre-med department sucks

If you are a Georgia resident eligible for the Hope Scholarship, then Georgia Tech should be tuition free for you. Georgia Tech has serious grade deflation which could affect your chances for admission to medical school. It is hard to attend Tech if you really don't want to be there. In your situation, you should have considered Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee for biology as they offer merit scholarships to about 40% of their students (I think) and their is no grade deflation. Rhodes also has a working relationship with St. Jude's Hospital for medical research. Attend Georgia Tech for a year, do nothing but study, then transfer to Rhodes College. With your stats, you may want to contact Rhodes on Monday to see if they can work with you for this year. It is not NYC or Atlanta, but it is biology & pre-med friendly. Vanderbilt University is also a school offering substantial merit scholarship money as does Alabama.

The only reason I would say nyu over emory, is stern over goizetta, for
location

It was a hard choice for me between Emory and NYU. I visited both schools last April before making up my mind. Emory was very generous, but I finally chose NYU Stern over Emory. I love NYU, but I know I would have loved Emory too.
