Emory or Tufts?

Trying to decide between Tufts and Emory... undeclared major, looking for liberal arts obviously... any opinions?! I know this is a vague post, but I decided i should just start a general discussion and then get more specific later on

Emory or Tufts? Atlanta or Boston?

Flying must be an issue for the parents, unless I can convince them otherwise.. I'm from Jersey, just to put it in perspective

What is the stronger school for foreign language? What about study abroad (I'm pretty sure Tufts for that one..)

For foreign language, study abroad, and for the distance from home, I suggest you go with Tufts. It's right outside of Boston so you still have the very 'college' atmosphere, and Boston's just an awesome city. Plus I think it was newsweek that ranked Tufts #1 in study abroad.

thank you very much.. I meant to say "Flying might* be an issue for the parents..." Its not really much of an issue for me.

What are some of the positives for Emory? What is Emory best known for, in terms of the undergrad education they provide?

basically medical/pre-med but i've heard that it's also big on politics and foreign language

tons of languages and great study abroad opportunities to pursue them. S was there for 4 days last week - stayed in a language house and was very pleased with breadth of offerings (he's always had a hankering to take Sanskrit - I did that and regretted it!) Host was English major and was very pleased with profs and program.

Emory also has the Carter Center with lots of internship opportunities. My son went on a freshman seminar abroad and also next year will be spending a semester abroad . He is studying both Arabic and Hebrew and if his schedule ever permits ( he has been taking about 20-21 hours a semester so he can fit in all the courses he wants in addition to his languages) he would like to add Farsi to the mix. Languages are very rigorous at Emory..and very well taught. His Arabic class was being filmed (by some national association of university foreign languages professors of some sort) for use in seminars on how to teach foreign languages because the instruction is considered to be of the best quality .

AS far as cities go, he loves Atlanta--a lot of restaurants, sports , theater, concerts--but of course Boston has all that too.

He's been very, very happy at Emory. For what it's worth, we visited both Emory and Tufts--my son ended up applying ED to Emory (a "match" school for him) and taking Tufts off his list entirely--but then his cousin did exactly the opposite.

I know that Emory has really good study abroad programs. The fact that Emory is in Atlanta, a city of diverse peoples, can expose you to people of different people who speak different languages. So, that's one factor to consider.

Smartaleck if you want to know more about Emory you can IM me: Cormeister37. I should try to get you to come. Emory's pretty amazing.

copper, do you use msn? I'm debating whether to go to Emory or UNC (business major.)

i made a post just like this one, i'm pretty sure about emory but i did love tufts when i visited (i just dont want to go to a northern school because im from here).. so its making me rethink everything i was so sure about before. still like 95% sure emory is my #1 though:)

I love the foreign language department at Emory. It's the reason I've decided to major in a language.

emorys got a great study abroad program. in fact, copper is studying abroad for the summer right now in china.

tufts will be more politically aware than emroy i think. but colder. brr.

i like emory's foreign language dept tho i dont know much about it. im a french minor. all i know is it's easy and my professor (ive had the same one all yr) loves me and shes awesome.

my parents had an issue with the distance thing at first, before i came (im from ny) but now they like it so much better than my oldest sister who went to school in VA and they had to drive 7+hrs for her. when you fly, its much more convenient to drive to the airport, wait an hr, hop on a 2hr flight, and then youre here. less stress and wear on the parents than a long drive. (altho i guess tufts isnt a long drive, but it's gotta be like 4 hrs for you right?)

obviously i would pick emory. but i guess im biased. and i dont know much about tufts since i didnt even consider it. all i know is emorys a good place. and you should come here.

Yes, I'm in China! It's amazing. The foreign language programs at Emory happen to be pretty good. I took spanish last semester: a great deal of work but well worth it in the end and probably my favorite class.
