Emory or Washington U. St Louis Early

I love the programs at WUSTL but I am concerned it is too much of a red school for me. Emory is more of a possibility, but I don't like the location or programs as much. While I am planning to apply to both, I can only apply to one early and do not want to waste my early application on a school that is unrealistic. Can you help me decide whether I have a real chance at WUSTL or if Emory is my best bet?

Can you tell us more about yourself? (GPA, course load, SAT/ACT, SAT II’s, ECs/volunteering, etc.)

^ Yes, exactly as Thebeatlestoday said, we actually need statistics to help you. All of the things mentioned above, as well as personal interest in both locations, intended major, and location will help US help YOU make a decision

Yep, need stats.

Honestly, if you’re unsure about either school being the right place for you then you should probably just apply to both during the RD round.

My Statistics:
-I go to a relatively competitive private school in Florida- about 40 to a grade- our school does not rank.

  • Unweighted gpa: 3.68
  • Weighted gpa: 4.01
  • Sat: 640 math, 800 reading, 680 writing- 2120 total
  • AP’s:
    Language 4
    Psychology 5
    US History 4
    Human Geo. 5
    World History 4
    Literature next year
    European History next year
  • Almost all my classes where honors or AP
    Extracurriculars
  • Sports: played varsity lacrosse 3 out of 4 years
  • Volunteer
    Humane Society every week
Went to Japan to help with tsunami relief
  • Clubs
    Interact club 11th/ 12th grade
    Awards
  • AP scholar with distinction
  • Honor roll every year

Try to raise SAT/ACT score before applying to increase your chances. Mid reach at Emory and High reach at WUSL (just because their admissions process is crazy and LOTS of reallllly qualified students apply).

Your ECs (like mine) are on the weaker side also and no leadership positions could be a slight problem. However, your GPA is below average for both schools. Your SAT is around what it needs to be for Emory, but on the lower side for WUSL. Like I said, take SAT again an aim for 2200+ to really be competitive.

Agree with other posters that your EC seem a bit weak, and test scores an GPA are a bit low for WUSTL. Now Emory and WUSTL really look a lot at demonstrated interest. WUSTL had ED acceptance rate of about 26% this year. FYI my son (from Florida) will be attending WUSTL this fall.

BTW what did you mean that WUSTL is too much of a red school? If its politics, they’re a pretty liberal school just like Emory.

By red I meant that it might be to competitive for me- (my counselor calls safe schools green schools and more difficult schools red schools)

I’m also going to take the SAT’s one more time before applying so hopefully my scores will be higher. Also I know my gpa is lower than I would like, however it has improved every year. In 11th it was a 3.75uw.

Please more help!!

Take the SAT again in October. Then, if I were you, I would apply to Emory ED. It is slightly less selective/competitive than WUSL
