General Comments:

@skieurope
Can you please pin this thread in the Emory forum?

Hi @VANDEMORY1342 ! I am wondering if the extended deadline is for the materials like rec, test score, transcripts…etc or for the application itself? (supplemental essays) Thanks!

@Chelydraroach
Well there is a thread on “Red-dit” stating this. It seems to be for application materials but I would love an application just in case the application itself hasn’t been extended, (although it is a possibility that it has).

Applied back in November. Hoping for good news here! When do decisions normally come out? It says Feb, but is there any possibility of it coming earlier at all?

@Pastpower
Late March, early April usually. Where does it say February? Are you sure you didn’t apply ED2 by accident?

Chance me please for RD
SAT I:None
ACT: C 30 E 35 M 28 R 32 S 26
SAT II: Spanish 690 Math II 670 English 670
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0):3.9
A total of 5 AP classes in my high school career (Art History, Calc AB, Spanish Lang, English Literature, Chemistry). I received gold medals on the National Spanish Exam during my freshman and sophomore years.

Extracurricular activities (place leadership in parenthesis): Dorm Prefect, member of the Spanish National Honors Society, member of the Campus Ministry Team, Dumbach Honors Scholar, tour guide for school, varsity soccer two-year player, varsity track for four year, varsity dance team for 2 years, member of Human Rights Club

I have also spent my summers at medical immersion programs at Northwestern (NSLC and BioMedical Program, Georgetown, Boston University, WashU). I spent my junior year summer volunteering at my local hospital and have worked as a sales rep at a local clothing shop.

I have gone to two different schools, I went to a regular day school in the Chicago area and transffered my junior year to boarding school.
My recommendations I hope were pretty good as I have good relationships with my history and math teachers.
Hopefully my essays will help my application a lot because I have heard only positive feedback from people.

Other Schools you are applying to: Deferred from Georgetown EA, accepted UIUC, applying regular to BU, Tulane, Cornell, Northwestern, Vanderbilt, Wash U, Notre Dame, UNC Chapel Hill
General Comments: My main concern is my scores, on my school naviance everyone around me was accepted but looking on past people from college confidential I am worried. Do you think i’m gonna get rejected?! Also I applied to both oxford and emory, I hope to get accepted to Emory, but I put Oxford as a back up.

@collegecrazy432
Well your schools naviance might be more predictive, however those might be over the last 10 years instead of last year. Your stats are low, but your URM status helps. But again the acceptance rate is low for RD so I would still say Low Reach at least. Are you intending to be Pre-Med.

Pchance me Emory + Oxford

General Comments: I really don’t expect to get in. Sure my SAT is a little higher than avg but I sent my app with a typo and with poor, rushed essays. I kind of blend in with every single valedictorian so nothing really stands out about me.

By the way, Emory is one of my top choices, but does anyone else find the fact that it doesn’t have football off-putting?? :))

@Blazchkowski123
Your GPA is at the 25%, while you ACT is at the 75%. Emory does not superscore the ACT so they will only see a 34, which is still very good. Your extra curricular are excellent, but your SAT 2’s really helps you stand out.
I would say low Reach. Maybe even High Match because of the SAT 2’s. However you’re a High Reach for the Scholars program.

@ironweasal
Your a great applicant, and your URM status helps tremendously. Your extra curricular(s) really helps you stand out but they aren’t consistent and I wonder why you want to be a bio major (pre-med maybe?). I think your a Match/High Match for Emory. High Match/Low Reach for Upenn.

@anxiouswreck : Uhmm no, hopefully not anyone that views it as anywhere near a top choice. I honestly would not recommend applying if you find it a big enough deal to mention as off-putting. It should at least move further down the list. If you feel that way, I honestly would not put a premium on getting into some top tier public or private. Consider good honors programs (and there are many) as well. But definitely do not put Emory that high if you felt it necessary to bring that up. It should bring you pause if that is important to you (I know you are being a little tongue and cheek, but you still brought it up which means you may actually feel some way about it). Move near the bottom I guess.

@ironweasal : Okay, you probably have a good chance at most of these places I guess. However, based upon the other places you are applying, exactly why did you include Oxford? It is so different from the other large/medium research universities you are aiming for. As I just told anxiouswreck, do not put this big premium on getting into or eventual access some super strong or top tier private, put in fits as well even if the overall school is less prestigious. You should be able to gain access to excellent honors programs or other academically rigorous programs that meet your needs. Do not apply to Emory or Oxford unless you legit know what you want from them or can see yourself there. Oxford should not be a backup that gives you access to a top tier. You should really be able to see yourself there for the 2 years and then transitioning to a much larger and very different environment. If any school is not a fit, regardless of any prestige or access to prestige it has, you could be wasting your time somewhere you don’t like.

Can anyone chance me please?

Other Schools you are applying to: NYU, USC, UC (except Merced), Northeastern University, Boston University, Boston College, Pepperdine University, Fordham (accepted), Tulane (accepted), PSU.
General Comments:
Maybe my recommendation letters are good because it is from a professor at Caltech? I did okay during the summer and I think it will be a bonus.

@bernie12 I really don’t care that much. I just brought it up because I thought it was very strange how Emory has the usual varsity and club sports but no football. It was kind of my way of asking if anyone knew why lol. Obviously if it was a big deal to me I would have applied to like Clemson or Penn State.
I also did very careful research, and not like you know my tippy top choices, but they are a similar size, environment, and proximity to a major city (although I like larger schools too- hence Uconn, UNC, etc). Their life science academics fit me well and I’ve visited 2/3 of them and liked them a lot. One of them was Emory, thank you very much. I feel slightly insulted that you just assumed I’m grasping for a big name school, and honestly don’t know why I’m justifying my college choices to a stranger on the internet.

@anxiouswreck
Emory used have football, but they got rid of it. Apparently too many rape/sexual misconduct cases. This was like 100 years ago tho, so it might just be an urban legend.

You’re more or less the perfect applicant, Val, good EC’s especially the TED talk, and Great SAT 2’s.
I personally think you will get in (Match/ High Match) because of the ranking.
However Scholars is a Reach/High Reach for everyone especially considering that your SAT isn’t that high and you EC’s aren’t exceptional.

@JaqueBear
Your SAT 2’s are very good, however from what I see here you don’t have much else going for you. Your GPA is below avg and the SAT’s are avg. Your EC’s are a bit lackluster as well. I say it really comes down to your essay. Reach

@anxiouswreck
@VANDEMORY1342

Here’s an article entitled “Why Doesn’t Emory Have a Football Team” from the Emory Wheel" (the school newspaper)
http://emorywheel.com/why-doesnt-emory-have-a-football-team/

It has nothing to do with rape/sexual misconduct cases.

In fact, Emory has never had a football team for reasons explained in the article.

Emory athletics is less low key but quite accomplished in certain areas:

The men’s tennis team won the national championship last year (both Emory College and Oxford College):

Emory’s women’s tennis team reached the finals of the national championship.

Emory’s men’s soccer team reached the Elite Eight last year:

4 Emory swimmers competed at the US Olympic trials:

@BiffBrown
I guess rumors spread fast lol, that was i first thing I was told as a first year. I should have done my research.
