Good Luck!
@bernie12 , @ljberkow, agree if you are suggesting that SAT cheating is insignificant. Cheating in high school is more rampant, but of course depends on the high school. Larger public high schools with +30 students in the class are harder for teachers to monitor. S does not cheat but has witnessed it, both high achieving and lower achieving students. It is not surprising when the stakes are so high to keep the GPA up for college admission. Glad to hear the Emory Honor Code is strict.
Just wondering for those that are waiting on BC and Emory, if we’re accepted and financial aid is equal at both schools, where do you guys think you would go to?
@VANDEMORY1342 : Assume nothing and also, it doesn’t really matter. What matters is who and how many get in. If it is the same students as yesteryear, then the admit rate is irrelevant. A decrease (especially with similar students) just means extra volume came from those Emory wasn’t interested in or felt weren’t the best fit. Simple math. If there was any increase in apps and they have the same yield model, yes the admit rate will decrease. Nothing more should be made of it and honestly prospective students should not really ask about that so much as WHO they chose. The only time one should be concerned about the admit rate is if the school is admitting less students overall which signals an improved yield model. This would actually make it harder to get in for the type of students who are typically admitted.
@BCBoundMaybe, many factors to consider. Is cold weather an issue? Atlanta/Emory favored in the fall and winter, especially this weekend! Division 1 Football and sports might favor BC if you’re into that.Then there’s the major and where you might want to ultimately work and live after college. Other factors may include presence of Greek life which is more prominent and “preppy” at BC than at Emory. It’s a tough question that must be answered case by case. If you care about rankings, USNWR rates Emory slightly higher than BC but Forbes I believe ranks BC higher, so maybe it’s a wash there. Will come down to personal preference and fit.
@Nomorelurker Don’t @ me anymore thanks. This site needs a block function.
@heyooo123
It depends on when you sent it, I’m sure they have been done with decisions for at least a few days now. They’re probably just double checking their work now.
Outch! #NoBullying
Agree Vandemory1342. Let’s refrain from commenting on each other’s posts in the future and all will be good.
Emory recognizes and encourages Greek life with a 30% participation rate. BC does not. If any of you get into both, the good news is that these two schools are as different as night and day when it comes to sports, Greek life, diversity in student body, and climate. One is obviously Jesuit and the other is secular. Both are excellent schools, but you might be a better “fit” at one and not the other.
@ljberkow : Oh please lol. Some folks are going to resort to shallow stuff like: “Is Emory known as well inside the Northeast of Boston area” and then they are going to choose like that. Some will hopefully choose based upon fit, but I have seen the pettiness before.
@Nomorelurker totally agree. I was just wondering of those that applied and what their preferences were. For me (first have to be accepted at one or both)… i really like BC - i love the campus and proximity to boston and also the boston hospitals. It’s always been my dream school. I’m pre-med, so i think both schools give a great foundation. I’m not too worried about greek life because i think i’ll find friends at both. I do think Emory may have the edge from an academic standpoint to help me prep for med school. I also would like the chance to walk on at Emory on their soccer team. It would be awesome if I get a choice. I think if i do, I’ll probably pick BC, but I would probably re-visit both to make sure I’m making the right choice. Just was wondering which way others are thinking…
@ljberkow @bernie12
I have no idea how some students apply to BC and Emory, like who is advising them? You minus well throw Davidson and UCLA in there as well.
Because we liked both?
@VANDEMORY1342 i sent it along with my common application in january i was just curious if you think they read them or not
@VANDEMORY1342 : Nah, it makes sense. It is a D-1 school that will feel more like Emory than other D-1 schools, and in addition has a strong b-school and stuff. Definitely a place that has a truly east coast social and academic vibe.
To me it is much like how someone would also be interested in Cornell or Northwestern. They have D-1 sports but still keep a certain vibe overall despite that. It makes more sense to have overlap with BC than say Duke or VU…but branding, rankings, and location cause lots of overlap with the latter.
Don’t know much about Davidson other than it being really good.
@BCBoundMaybe, one other thing to consider is that I’ve heard that BC freshman housing is off campus and require shuttle bus to and from, which can be an issue during icy weather/snow. Emory does not have that issue. Agree that Emory may be slightly more rigorous academically and as pre-med, lots of internship access with the CDC or adjacent hospitals, but also plenty of opportunities likely there in Boston too. May also want to consider if either have grade deflation in terms of GPA for applying later to medical school. I don’t know about Emory or BC in terms of how competitive or cut throat either may or may not be, but some pre-med students do consider that in choosing a school. Both are great schools.
@iappliedto25
That’s what I’m saying, if you happen to like both than you probably just happen to like all top schools on a superficial level. They’re very different schools.
@heyooo123 Oh then of course they did. Hopefully it helped you.
I don’t think it’s entirely superficial and can see why some would apply to both BC and Emory. BC and Emory both have strong business schools and are great for pre-professional students. The similarities kind of end there though.
I don’t understand the plus argument of BC being close to Boston hospitals as and advantage over Emory. It certainly is a decent ride on the green line and then a walk. Emory has Emory University Hospital and Childrens Hospital adjacent to campus (as well as both the CDC and Yerkes).
I do understand the pull of BC in New England and even New York. Boston is a great college city and BC has the ACC big time sports going on. Emory lacks that is a bit more self contained. If you are from the northeast (like so many Emory grads), it’s a great opportunity to be part of a true national university and experience a different part of the country. Hopefully, those of you who are interested will get in and visit on an admitted students day (they are only two and three weeks away). I suppose the tough thing to understand is that so many of the things you would like about BC just aren’t there at Emory (and the other way around too).
