Emory RD Class of 2022

Emory never had football. Do they still sell those t-shirts Emory Football undefeated since 1836 at the bookstore?

@anxiouswreck , you wrote that it was off putting, but it’s really not. In fact, the great thing is that Emory has nice facilities and they are available to all students. Intramural sports are great. College football is a huge money pit for so man schools, especially those not in a power five conference. I don’t think you should be insulted by what Bernie wrote. I wasn’t sure why you brought up lack of a football team being off putting. It’s not off putting for the people who want to be there. You have great SATs and perfect grades, but you admitted that you put little effort into your application and barely reviewed it (typo), so you might see why someone would question if Emory is really a top or near the top choice for you.

Lol rip. Do I have a chance at Oxford? Emory is definitely a great choice for me.

@ljberkow Oxford was Emory back then so I guess it did have it very briefly. And yes, those classic shirts are still sold!
@anxiouswreck : yet you want a stranger who is not a part of the admissions committee to chance you based on an incomplete admissions profile (so you don’t want advice in other areas but want us to chance you and simulate the mysterious and cryptic nature of a multi-person admissions committee that I know nothing about)? That doesn’t make sense. I am looking out for YOU (it makes more sense and borrows more from experience for me to comment on the selection and fit than the chances of admission, because I don’t know and nor do any of us even if you are in the 75%, like over 1/3 of them are denied with it likely being an even higher % of those who fall in that range for the RD rounds. Why bother). There are many great schools on that list. Based upon your need to bring that up, Emory should drop in your list (again, you brought it up and joked about it being “off-putting” of all things). There are many schools on that list really strong in life sciences that have the football team or whatever you want with regards to athletics. I am just saying that usually someone who feels strongly enough to bring it up (even jokingly like you did…I guess that is what it was) often end up regretting Emory at least a little. My question for an applicant that vaguely says: “It is good in the life sciences and that fits me”…what exactly do you think makes Emory particularly better in it than any of your other choices for YOU? Are there any specific programs or research areas that Emory excels at within the life sciences that may not exist or be as big as some of your contenders or is it just “strong” in this vague way. I find many are attracted to elite institutions (I myself was guilty of this) because of this sort of vague academic strength that is taken for granted (it ended up being great for me because I ended up invited to a special program that accelerated to advanced course options and exposing me to the research infrastructure as a freshman, which is what I valued and likely saved me from choosing a route that gave a relatively above average, but not amazing experience). In reality, many less prestigious places may be as good or stronger in such an area as well as not having characteristics (or lacking) ones that are “off-putting”.

I just ask that prospective students think and research a little more and be honest with themselves. It ain’t the easiest and I may not be the nicest at addressing this issue, but it needs to be done. As a person that supports Emory, I want to encourage those who may be a fit to attend or apply. I went there and remember those (some were friends) who had a gut feeling that the lack of “big sports” was somewhat a thing for them. They ended up somewhat regretting the decision in terms of their social lives. Most people who put it seriously at the top of their list do not bring that up at all and certainly don’t mention how portions of an application to said school were rushed and stuff…I mean come on. You could be offended, but I am looking out for you. I also believe in the power of visits, but they usually are only one day and are ultra superficial introductions to the school. Many students will claim they “seriously considered it because it is really good in this area” yet did not bother to attend a class session of a popular professor or anything so don’t even really know what the academics look or feel like (they only have hearsay and marketing pitches and stories) and barely talked to random students or professors (outside of the tour guide) during visits. It is just a lot of vagueness and assumptions.

@VANDEMORY1342 thank you for the chance!

@BiffBrown thank you for the link, it makes sense now.

@ljberkow Again, I was just mentioning it off-handedly because I didn’t know why. “Off-putting” was not the right word I suppose… more like “strange” or “interesting.” I just know a lot of schools that aren’t fabulous football machines still offer it, so I was just surprised. It was just an interesting fact, that is all. And Emory rose to the top for me after I applied super early in November when my season was over and I had a more time to research. I regret applying for Emory Scholars very much, and wish I could redo everything send my app now instead. As for the typo, it was on my Common Application, which had been sent to 6 colleges before I spotted it. I reviewed my application so many times, and my mother and brother never caught it either. I pray the admissions officers don’t either.

@bernie12 I apologize if I was snippy with you, I understand you have good intentions. Again, learning that there is no football does not make me regret my application in the slightest. They have club field hockey and gymnastics if I ever choose to return, so that checks off the box of athletics for me. I was actually not expecting a chance (which I realize now was stupid), and I just posted my stats kind of as a “hello.” I appreciate your feedback greatly. Emory is not my #1 because I don’t know as much as I do about the other two. I just meant I like it a lot and it is a little more realistic than the other schools I like. If I get accepted, obviously I would revisit and consider it more in depth. I just don’t want to get too entrenched in a school with such a low acceptance rate. A lot of the schools on my list are reaches, so I would only fly out and revisit and consider only those that would accept me (if any ever do lololol). Again, sorry for starting an argument over the stupidest off-hand comment that really meant nothing.

@anxiouswreck no worries and good luck. You applied to BU as well and they dropped football decades ago. When I went to Emory, I went to pro sports games once a month, but enjoyed intramurals. Emory is different and students and alums embrace that. If you really are motivated to go to Emory, I hope you do.

@JaqueBear

Do you have good AP test scores (mostly 5s with a few 4s sprinkled in)?

Is your high school very competitive?

These are things that, if true, should be made clear to the admissions committee because your unweighted GPA is the great weak point in your application. That can be offset if your high school is very competitive and your AP scores are high. Your very good SAT II scores help in that regard.

My high school is a very good one in Los Angeles and my classes are relatively harder. I do have mostly 4s and 5s and my GPA is in an upward trend. My school doesn’t weight but my GPA looks okay in terms of UC GPA.@BiffBrwon

@JaqueBear
Emory doesn’t utilize freshman year grades so you might want to recalculate.

I didn’t count Freshman year which I have a perfect GPA…I did badly sophomore year. I took 3 AP classes and had to drop one and had an unweighted GPA of about 3. Lol
@VANDEMORY1342

@JaqueBear

Hopefully, you reported your AP scores with your common app. If not, you should supplement your application with those scores.

Presumably, your high school is well known for its rigor or alternatively your high school counselor notes that in the counselor’s letter? If not, how would you convey that information to colleges?

I wouldn’t be so sure about freshman grades not counting and would call admissions to confirm. The last information session I sat in on, there was no mention of GPA being calculated only for grades 10-12. Do not believe everything you read on CC. It’s not official and there is enough bad information going around. This one might be true, but you find anything online anywhere that indicates it.

I talked to my counselor and I think she would mention it in the letter. I did put all the AP scores I currently have on my application, and my senior course load is very rigorous with 4 APs and one college level class. Hopefully it would help. I applied both Oxford and Emory. @BiffBrown

We were told that Emory recalculates a student’s GPA based on only core classes - removing PE, band, and other non-core type classes. I’m assuming this includes Freshman year as this would give them 3 years of data on which to make a decision. I’m not sure if they actually do this, but this is what we were told when we went on our admissions visit.

That’s good to hear. I got a C in band. There is a lot going on for me haha. @nightstalker160

Did anyone do the “What would you miss most about your current community supplemental?”

@ljberkow 2 different admissions reps told me they do not count freshman grades.

Well, this same discussion has been had here before and they look at and consider everything. Try not including them with your transcript and you can bet they’ll ask for them.

Has anybody gotten an email from Emory yet regarding an account where we access our decision? How does that work with Emory?

@smarting00
Decent stats, Where are you applying ED2 to? If not I would change my Emory app to ED2. Your stats are slightly above avg mainly due to you’re very high GPA. However your ACT/SAT is avg. Some schools count Filipino as URM, I’m not sure if Emory does or not. Your class rigor of 7 AP classes also seems generic/avg, when you EC’s are below avg and don’t help you at all. Hopefully you’re essays were great. If not I would call admissions to move my app to ED2.
Emory- Low Reach/ Reach
Duke University- High Reach
University of Notre Dame- Reach
