General Comments: Super excited to have been accepted!

@polikunder1, @bernie12
I’m sorry if I sounded snobbish and condescending. I’m whining and I’m mad because I wanted Emory more than Washu. No need to lecture me about how the college admission is holistic. I think we all know that. Maybe I did overestimate myself. Maybe I just wasn’t a good fit. I know.

@TheTennisNinja
Thanks for offering everyone some information! That is awesome. What is the benefit of a Neuroscience Major on a premed track attending Oxford instead of Emory if admitted to both? That really confuses me. Lol. Why admit to both? Hmmm. Anyway, I also have an offer to Tulane so I obviously like a smaller close knit campus. Does Emory/Oxford offer any type of aid to middle income families with an AGI of around 80k? Can you tell me what the dorms are like at Oxford and what students do for fun. I visited Emory over the summer but ran out of time to see the Oxford campus. Thanks again for all the info!

I got into Georgia Tech for Computer Science but denied at Emory???

@fizzymangoes college is a crapshoot

@Toeupwms My daughter was admitted to both Tulane and Oxford and is a sophomore now at Oxford. Can you go to revisit day? We hadn’t visited Oxford prior to that but went to see both schools for revisits. Tulane actually feels much bigger than Oxford although I know Tulane has small class sizes. @bernie12 can tell you about the difference between being premed at Oxford vs Emory campuses better than I can, but I know a high percentage of Oxford students are also pre-med and you will have all the classes you need there should you choose the Oxford campus. Congratulations!

Totally wasn’t expecting to get in (30 ACT), but I was so proud of my essays and I guess my writing paid off! Accepted to Oxford (my top choice) and waitlisted at Emory. :slight_smile:
Does anyone know if/when Emory publishes an article that talks about the accepted students? I know a bunch of schools typically have this page where they break down the number of applicants, the number of accepted, and the geographic/racial distribution of the class. Does Emory do this?

@Toeupwms I’m not a science major so I can’t really speak for the Neuroscience aspect but I guess if you like to learn science in a more inquiry-based, hands on setting, Oxford may be the better choice because of the small class sizes. I’m sure they offer aid to your income level. The residence halls at Oxford are Elizer, Murdy, Fleming, JRC, and Haygood. Fleming is the nicest - the dorms and facilities are like that of a hotel. Elizer and Murdy come next - they are nice but not as nice as Fleming. The worst are JRC and Haygood since they are the oldest and IMO look a bit like dungeons. Students do all sorts of things for fun. Some (like me) play sports. Others (also like me) go out to parties on weekend nights. If you don’t like those activities, don’t worry as there is no pressure to join them and there are plenty of people who don’t engage in them. Many people go into Atlanta during weekends as a common pastime.

accepted at emory college, didn’t apply to oxford with a 32 act and 3.9 uw gpa. congrats to everyone who got in !!! and if you didn’t don’t let it get you down, there are so many more opportunities out there :slight_smile:

@Toeupwms Oxford offers the freshman and sophomore level biology, chemistry and mathematics courses that you’d need to take for a neuro major. Oxford also offers the general education courses in psychology, sociology, English, etc. that most medical schools require these days.

However, the Atlanta (Emory College) campus has the advanced neuro courses that juniors and seniors typically take. Oxford doesn’t have these.

If you’re planning to come in with lots of AP credit in biology/chemistry/math and a desire to move immediately into the advanced neuro courses and/or a neuro research lab, then you’re better off starting at the Atlanta (Emory College) campus.

If you’re planning to take intro and sophomore level courses in biology/chemistry/math then Oxford offers a full menu of courses for you to take.

Thanks @VANDEMORY1342. So there is still hope if we haven’t heard anything regarding scholarship? D accepted at Oxford. I know we won’t qualify for financial aid even though we really need it. So we are really hoping for scholarship.

Rejected. 1500 SAT, 720 chem, 750 math 2, and 3.5 UW GPA. Good EC’s and lots of classes taken directly at the University of Connecticut (not accounted in my HS GPA). My GPA was quite low, so maybe that was why I was rejected. Quite disappointed tbh . Really hope I get into USC, but with this GPA, I’m very skeptical. =(( =((

Rejected at Emory College! Really wish I applied to Oxford :frowning:

@gingared No I wasn’t

@BiffBrown; @TheTennisNinja; @chemmchimney
Thank you all for the great information! Just two more questions: lol. Do the majority of students live on campus all four years or move off campus. Also, if freshman aren’t allowed to bing cars their first year, what type of transportation do they use to get around?

Is there a thread for waitlisted applicants?

@chemmchimney
Would love to know what made your daughter choose Oxford over Tulane and if there are any regrets?

@Toeupwms Oxford freshman are allowed to bring a car on campus, Emory freshman are not. But there is a good reason for this, Oxford is in a more rural area and Emory has access to mass transit on campus. Oxford students live on campus for their two years, Emory students do a bit of both.

Accepted to both!! :smiley:

@Toeupwms : My understanding is that like 63-70% stay on campus over the 4 years at Emory, so I guess that is “most”. https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/college-university-search/emory-university

As for NBB, as Biff said, if you wanna jump into NBB electives earlier (especially the more advanced ones) as well as core courses like 301, then Emory is a better place to start. In my opinion, if you have AP credits in STEM and want to accelerate in those areas, Emory offers more options because it is larger and has more course offerings and is more flexible with first year placement into courses in math, physics, and even biology.

At the intro. level, I think Oxford does biology and physics better whereas Emory may have an edge with chemistry, and again, Emory has an edge with NBB, having freshman seminars and “exploratory electives” specifically for frosh such as:
NBB 299: Explore NBB Research
and the 270 series (special topics but accessible to underclassmen).
