Emory Scholars Date

I hear that the date for the release (given that it is the same as last year) is around January 16, 2008 past 6:00 p.m. Oh and I just wanted to see if anyone else was applying from Alabama;I'll give my stats
SAT I: M:800, CR:730,W:680
SAT II: M II- 770, Bio.E-640
ACT:33
GPA: unweighted (about 4.0, and weighted it is 4.18)
class rank: 3 out of 440, our school is a blue ribbon high school.
classes: took 2 APs sophmore, 5 APs junior, and am taking 6 APs senior year
Recommendations:they should be okay, my college counselor is VERY VERY forgetful and borderline retarded.
Essays: should be pretty good, my scholarship essay is kind of different from the generic essay, but the others follow the normal format.
EC: just volunteer work in a public library and a hospital...nothing major, i spend most of my time playing and practicing tennis
Sports: Tennis takes up most of my time
Extra: I visited the campus and attended all the sessions in our city.
Decisions type: regular decision and emory scholars (to keep my options open for other colleges e.g. wash. u or possibly some ivy leagues)

Oh and if anyone has any questions...just feel free to post here and ill answer it.

I’m not from Alabama, but you and I have similar stats - good luck!

Class rank?

oh sorry i just edited it, and its 3 out of 440 and i also added the number of AP courses i take.

past 6:00pm?

Er, I’m 95% sure they are mailed, not released online at a specified time.

Last year’s was released on the 16th, which was a Tuesday. I’m not sure if they have a certain schedule where they release on the third Tuesday, always on the 16th, or just when they’re ready.

Luckily, we both aren’t too far from ATL and will be among to first to find out. :)

well i thought they release it both online and through mail later on…if you check your opus account and click admissions, then you can see your decision there…i am waiting so much for this day AHHHHHH. that is the day my dad fulfills his part of the agreement…a car ladies and gentleman for moi

i think we find out by mail only

damn it i thought it was by email or opus or something…oh well that just means i have to break into the atlanta post office and get my letter.

I was kinda surprised how quickly I’d received my EDI admit letter. I found out at midnight on OPUS and then at noon got the letter.

Honestly, I’m just glad I’ve got my college search over with. Scholars would be nice, but I don’t suppose it matters too much in the long run.

It matters if you’re not rich :(

wait so we should get a letter on january 15th and get a notification via opus the same day also…

No, I’m just saying that when things are mailed out of Emory, they come very quickly.

Maea: yeah, I know, it sucks. Luckily Emory gives out pretty good Finaid. And if you are getting significant finaid from Emory, scholarships might not help you as much as you’d think, because need-based aid can be decreased. I’ll be taking out quite a bit in loans, but I know I’m not getting full-tuition, and since I likely wouldn’t even get the full $10K non-scholar but semifinalist award due to need-grant adjustment, the waiting is only concerning maybe $5-6k a year. Even if I didn’t get it, I could get other scholarships outside emory to help bridge the gap before they kill my need-aid.

Does anybody know if we have a hypothetical student Bob, who has an EFC of $10,000, $5k in selfhelp with loans and work-study, and $35K in need-based grant, and Bob receives a $10k award, will Emory take away the $5k in loans and reduce $5k of the EFC, or simply the $5k in loans and then reduce need grant by $5k? Sorry if this question is a bit convulsed.

Eeeks! It’s so nervewracking :(

jmw: I know they’re pretty good about FA, but my parents make a pretty decent income, so I’m not going to get much need-based aid. Only problem is that my parents are also very frugal, and don’t think they should be spending money on a private college when I’ve already been accepted on full scholarship to a state school. However, I hate the state school. Boo.

i mean you never know about the scholars program though…i mean scores are a pretty good indication, but the acceptance for these things are kind of erratic and people who have higher scores than others might not get semi-finalist and those that shouldn’t based academically do

For anybody hoping that Emory Scholars will help supplement their need-grant, I found this: "Emory is required to make adjustments for external scholarships and resources if a student’s demonstrated eligibility (or total cost of education) has already been met. To the extent possible, it is our policy to adjust self-help awards before reducing grant

I would suppose that eligibility is the same as need, which is defined as COA minus EFC, so our hypothetical Bob in my above post, would only benefit $5k a year when Emory uses that scholarship to take out the $5k in loans and W-S. His need-based grant would apparently be reduced to $30K. So doing the math, unless Bob received one of the very hard to get full rides, he’d only go from having a $10k EFC + $5k loan/W-S to just his $10k EFC. All Bob can do is find up to $5k in scholarships, then he benefits no more until he accumulates $40k in scholarships (i.e., not gonna happen). Bob can only change his contribution to his education from $60k over 4 yrs, to $40k. Not bad, not great.

(Interestingly enough though, unless Bob got a full-ride elsewhere, a public school wouldn’t be much, if at all, cheaper due to his EFC.)

Although Emory Scholars isn’t an outside scholarship, I’m pretty sure it’s treated the same in terms of adjusting need-aid.

Edit: also found today’s fun fact - 38% of freshman surveyed had parental income in excess of $200k. I’d bet the 100k-200k range catches just as many students. The Emory stereotype of a bunch of wealthy kids… absolutely true?

My D definitely found out on-line last year. I think she got an e-mail that instructed her to go to OPUS to check her status, but I’m not sure. Good luck to everyone.

according to this thread (post 23) last year the the results were on opus under admission

Just found it – following is the e-mail she received on 1/16:

The Office of Admission at Emory University has completed the review of our Emory Scholars nominees. Over 2,500 students were nominated for our merit based scholarships this year, and due to the program’s size constraints only 350 students were named semi-finalists. Decisions were mailed on January 16, 2007, via the U.S. Postal Service.

Additionally, we are excited to announce that we will be releasing decisions online, via the OPUS system. Decisions will be posted by 6:00 pm on Tuesday, January 16. Please note that decisions will be available to view online until January 26.

To check your admission decision online:

Sign on to your OPUS account

On the “Learner Services” main page, click the “Admissions” link

We understand this can be an anxious time and we thank you for your interest in Emory.

Best wishes,

Office of Admission

Hm, I could have sworn I read that unlike admissions, Scholars isn’t notified online. Oh well, do you happen to remember whether the decisions were actually posted at 6pm or earlier? I know EDI got their decision exactly at midnight ET, even though Emory said they would release several hours later.
