The Emory Scholars program is really, really, really competitive. It is a little bit random too. You can apply, but actually being an emory scholar is like getting into Harvard.

I applied for the Emory Scholars program, and should have had strong recommendations and everything, but my GPA is less than most of what I've heard.

I'm a 3.57 UW/4.0 W with a 1460 GPA (2160 if you count writing). I didn't take any SAT II's, but believe I have strong essays and teacher recommendations. extra curriculars are decent (3 year varsity swimming, national merit semifinalist and likely finalist, debate, NHS, treasurer of SHS, and maybe a couple others). But does anyone know how much Emory takes into account the scholars/admissions essays and the extenuating circumstances presented in them. My mom just died after a 3.5 year battle with cancer, and relied heavily on me through my high school for support and it took away from my focus on school.

Would my circumstances put me in the ballpark, or am I still a long shot at any kind of Emory scholarship?

You have chance for the full or the partial scholarship. Bear in mind that Emory is using this thing to build stats for college ranking purposes. You have to be top notch in EVERYTHING. They have won cross-admits with HYPSM with this program. This is purely for image building. Because of the prevailing "Tufts" syndrome at Emory, you have to totally show interest in every way or you will not make it.

I would prefer to go to Emory, and it's one of only two schools I'm even applying to, but am not willing to pay 40k a year to do it. UF is offering me a full ride on account of national merit, so if I don't get this I'll almost definitely go there. I made that fact clear in one of my short responses, and am essentially just waiting at this point. I understand that last year semifinalist notificatiosn were sent out around Jan 15 (which coincidentally is my birthday), so I'll just wait til then and hope that I make the first round of cuts. Any reassurance you guys can offer is welcomed, but I guess at this point it wont make much difference unless you're on the board of admissions.

Yeah, but my dad makes around 90k a year, an online calculator judged me to have 20k or need federally, about 10 institutionally, and considering UF will give me a full ride including room and board when you factor other things in, there's no way in hell that my dad would pay 20-30k a year for me to go to Emory, and I'm not going into that kind of debt for an undergrad.

Did anyone want to read my Emory scholarships essays and tell me if you thought I had a shot? obviously it's not gonna make a huge difference now, but just to give me some peace of mind.
