I think that a big part of being a good candidate, from what I have experienced, is not so much about being what colleges want you to be… but more about what YOU want to be even if you’re scared. So it’s all about academic and personal inquiry.
So I’m a finalist for the Oxford Scholars program. I’m a little torn - I think I would have liked Emory more but I wouldn’t get any money there. For those of you who recieved set cash amounts (20k etc) did it specifiy which school?
My son got this letter…
you have been admitted to both Emory College and Oxford College! The Scholars Program Selection Committee is also pleased to share that you have been selected as an Oxford College Scholars finalist. we invite you to our Scholars’ Weekend, being held on campus from Friday, March 20 to Saturday, March 21. Approximately 60 fellow finalists will be in attendance, and the weekend will include an interview with the Selection Committee, time to meet current Oxford students and scholars, as well as members of the faculty and staff. Attendance for the entire program is required to be considered for a full-tuition scholarship.
We are very excited that he got selected to both colleges and very happy. With lots of blank questions though…
admitted to both college... does this mean, he can choose Emory or Oxford.. or does this mean, he needs to go first two years and then Emory (both??)
Oxford college scholarship finalist.. does this mean, from the 60 kids selected, they will further down-select.. and pick only say 30 or 40 kids?
in that case, is it worser than kids who already got 20k award etc.,?
Does this mean, he "has" to go to Oxford for 2 years to get the full tuition?
what is the difference academically, brand name (school prestige), real quality of education, group of friends/network etc.,
is this a situation where he didnt qualify for Emory scholars and but made to the next lower level?
@sallymeno11 would you like to share your stats? I’m not a finalist, but I’ve been offered Liberal Arts Scholarship to Emory University ($20,000 each year). I heard this year’s application pool was 6700+ so very very competitive…
@bsmdeager. He is admitted to both. He can go to Emory, for all four years, but then he won’t be eligible for the merit award. So yes, he didn’t get invited to Emory scholats; he got the next best thing.
@BSMDEager That’s exactly what I got, I guess we’ll meet in march! not sure how to feel, I would have preferred a flexible lower amount. All or nothing scares me.
So when I logged into the admitted student page, it only shows that I have admitted to Oxford. But my letter clearly states that I have been admitted to both schools. Does anyone else have that problem?
@sallymeno11 - so you were accepted into Wash U ED, didn’t rescind your application to Emory and were accepted as a Scholar finalist when you know that you can’t attend. Doesn’t that seem a bit selfish not to retract your application?
