@1415 Not everyone was so forthcoming announcing what they received, but it wasn’t really awarded as “full ride” and “full tuition” - I think they gave awards like 50% off tuition and others got a certain dollar amount per year, if I remember correctly. They also wanted to know who was really, really interested in attending before they announced the amounts. (some students were still waiting for other college admission decisions)
The visitation program was absolutely fantastic - they went out of there were to show how special Emory was. Hands down, one of the best college experiences!
Thanks a million desie1 for the info! Any recommendations on preparing for the interviews. What kind of questions did they ask?
@desie1 What do you mean that they wanted to make sure that people are interested in Emory? How did they determine that? Thanks! I’ll be attending the program in a few weeks. Also, @1415mom would be really great to hear what types of questions they ask!
@msmithcollege: While we should wait for that person to respond, usually big visitation weeks (especially those for special groups of students, whether it is minority or scholarship) are accompanied with surveys and the like that ask that specific question (or ask what other schools are being considered). I would also imagine they try to gauge it via interviews, perhaps through asking about it. Also, if you are “shadowing” a current Emory Scholar who is volunteering to showcase their daily life, they may ask as well or find ways (via close listening of conversations and etc. because, let us be real, students applying to several selective schools often keep the others in mind and openly talk about the offerings or environment at said schools with others in the same position as they are) to gauge it. I wouldn’t be surprised if those Scholars sometimes relayed information back to admissions or those making the decisions, because you don’t want to risk that money away to someone who would not really consider the place or have it as simply a “nice back-up option” in case others don’t go well. You want someone who may consider coming on the scholarship even if they got into another good school. Anyway, I just imagine that they have their ways…
Sorry you were waiting for my response - I was away. Please don’t think I’m an expert on this subject - I’m just relaying what my teenager told me last year. I don’t know that much!!! And I’m not sure I’m remembering everything. I definitely don’t remember what the interview questions were -except that at least one interviewer asked where you were already accepted. I also remember that there was a series of 3 or 4 interviews - you waited in the hall until each one was ready for you and the questions were straightforward. Nothing tricky or awkward. But the head of the program did ask the students to let them know at the end of the trip if Emory was really their first choice. They couldn’t offer everyone ALL the money, so she told them to speak to her privately if Emory was their #1. Also, this was for the Goizueta (business) scholars - there were only about 20 of them there. They never saw the Emory (liberal arts scholars) even though they were there at the same time. (I know this year, they won’t be there at the same time) but I know that last year, they were a much larger group than the Goizueta scholars. (80 of them?)
Also, they took them to two businesses and to a really nice dinner. And they gave them a lot of REALLY nice Emory memorabilia. Again, it was a fantastic experience.Good luck to all of you!!!
@Mark1965. Do you know whether Emory offers full ride scholarships at Scholar ’ s weekend or is it just for full tuition scholarship s?
@shoboemom do you know whether scholars weekend offers potentially larger scholarship s than the $20,000 per year mentioned in this thread as coming with some students’ acceptance letters from January?
@123monkey, pretty sure there is the possibility of full tuition from scholars. I don’t know if they offer more than that.
@123Monkey full rides are offered. A student from our high school received a full ride as an Oxford Scholar. She was a NMF, outstanding stats. I would think only the top applicants are offered full rides.
Will being an Oxford Scholar affect my financial aid package for Emory main campus?
@Mark1965 was the student from your high school who earned full ride Oxford Scholar status a freshman last year or earlier… Certainly it wouldn’t be known yet who earned such benefit for fall of 2015 yet, true? thanks!
She is a current freshman, sorry I should have clarified that in my original post.
Hey guys, I was just admitted to Emory and the Scholar program but the thing is I submitted my application way past Nov. 15, which I thought was the deadline to be accepted into the program.
How is that possible?
Hey guys, I just got accepted at emory with something called Emory Liberal Art’s Scholar (20.000 usd per year scholarship) I applied for Emory scholars but got rejected a while before? And do you think I’ll get any extra need based financial aid - being that I’m international - and that I need more aid to be able to go. Thanks!
Does anyone know what day/time previous years scholar finalists received word of their financial aid awards/scholar status? I’ve been anxiously waiting for days already!!
Wow! The wait is over! Got the scholarship but not sure if I’m going yet.
@msmithcollege -Congratulations! so is this for emory or oxford and did you get full tuition? did you get it by email or mail?
I got into the scholars program!! @jrParent mine came in an email, as I believe everyone’s decision should have. I’m not aware if the awards are different, but mine was full tuition, room and board, and fees paid. A full ride basically!! I’m so thrilled and so grateful.
@imtired2015 - Congratulations to you as well!!! when did you receive the email? my D is an oxford scholars and we are waiting to hear from oxford - looks like emory has released the scholoarship details ahead of oxford!
@jrParent Thanks so much. I received my notification on the 8th. All the best to your daughter!
