Hi everyone, I'm a junior right now interested in Emory. However, I don't have the money to go there unless I get a scholarship. I was just wondering if anyone had some light to shed on the program, application process, and acceptance into it.

Thanks!

the emory scholars program is great if you are an extremely well qualified applicant. basically, you must be recommended by your school early in the college process (they submit a form with your name), then you need to get an additional letter of rec. from a guidance counselor, and write a 750 word essay describing your interest in the program. after they receive all the applications, they choose a group of semifinalists, and then from there choose a group of finalists who come down to interview. idk the exact numbers, but a fair amount of people get it. percentage wise though, the numbers are not in your favor. if you have an interest, go for it because the reward is HUGE if you get accepted. also if you are interested in business there is the goizueta scholars program which i am doing, which is comprable but for business oriented students, same type of process but with less kids.

the emory scholar's program is reeeaallly hard to get. the semifinalist round itself has about a 16% acceptance rate, and the finalist round is a lot lower.

you might want to consider applying for the oxford scholar's program too (just check the "yes i want to apply to oxford!" box on the application haha). idk if you know this, but oxford is a smaller campus of emory. you spend 2 years there, then transfer to emory's main campus and graduate with an emory degree (no mention of oxford anywhere). the oxford scholarship is easier to get and provides the same benefits as emory scholars. once you leave oxford, your "Scholar" status transfers to emory, where you will continue on as an Emory Scholar

About 2500 apply.
About 300-350 get semifinalist status (12%-14%).
Of these:
125-175 will get a liberal arts scholarship of 10k-14k per year.
100 will get a John Emory scholarship...2/3 tuition...so probably 22-23k per year.
75 will be selected as finalists.
Of the finalists:
50 will get full tuition scholarships (33k per year)
25 will get full ride scholarships.

I got a LAS...and I was happy! And you can apply to be a member of the program as well as for either a 5k or 10k per year scholarship after your freshman year...so it's not like if you don't get it now, you can't ever get the perks of being an Emory Scholar (besides of course, those chosen before their freshman year get a lot more $$$)

To give you perspective into ES, I was a semifinalist. There were 350 semifinalists, and between 70 and 100 were to be chosen for Finalists. I believe about 75 were chosen, and unfortunately, I was not one of those few. Definitely apply, but know that it is an EXTREMELY rigorous and competitive program.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! It's nice to get some perspective, although I will still apply for it (it's worth a try, right?)

wreavesjr, congrats on semifinalist! I know that for those who even make it that far, there are other merit scholarships they are willing to offer people within the group. Good luck with the rest of the process.

Does anyone have an idea about the typical stats of a student, official or just from experience (i.e. someone you know)? Also, does debate help a lot in the selection process (I do policy and have qualified for nationals, etc. and I heard Emory is a pretty big debate school).

have you done well at nationals? i qualified 2 years in congress, didn't help me get past the semifinalist level haha
