I'm going to apply to the Emory Scholars program, regular decision. My stats:

-Race: Asian Male
-IB Diploma Candidate
-ACT:30
-GPA (Weighted):4.00
-Rank: Top 5%

-Good essays and letters of recommendation.

Chances?

Also, I'm planning on doing a joint major: Math & Computer science. How challenging would this be; would I have time for extra-curricular activities? I like to play tennis, would I be able to practice every day? I have visited Emory's campus, and I really liked the whole campus and atmosphere.

I don’t know if you’ll get Emory Scholar’s with a 30 on the ACT (also, the EC’s sound somewhat normal for an Emory student who would normally be admitted), but you may get in RD. Math and Computer Science at Emory won’t be that demanding (unless you want it to be good, in which case you take the better classes and professors). These 2 aren’t among the more elite/more intense programs at Emory and you should definitely have time for ECs such as tennis (I know a physics and math major who does extremely well and play’s tennis varsity, but admittedly is basically a genius and is extremely unusual). I advise you use your mathematical aptitude well by maybe getting involved with case competitions on campus (such as Global health. Being part of DECA, which I just looked up, and placing first in one of their competitions would make you very qualified). If you can sell yourself well and those recs are like you say, you could get an interview I guess and maybe some money?..I can’t say for sure, I just know that usually scholars would be above 75% stats wise and have ridiculous raw talent or EC’s, but I’m sure there are people who they see potential in who don’t meet such threshholds so I wouldn’t count yourself out yet. Just give it a shot I suppose. Also, may I ask what IB’s or SATII’s you took and did well on?

Yes, but isn’t the Scholar App. due Nov. 15 or something like that? Will they consider scores that come in later? As for IBs, get 5-7 on math so that you can perhaps exempt calculus 1 (I’m going to hope you’re in higher level math) at least and start at higher level maths (maybe 112-Z or even multi). It will increase your chance of being able to choose a quality instructor. Would be nice if you could skip CS 170, but the intro. CS sequence isn’t too bad and can actually make you learn from what I heard so I suppose you’ll be okay.

Yeah, we know they’re a bit low but let them try. Also, it sounds more like Emory Scholars’ cares about the person or else I would expect the SAT to be much higher (I’m sure there were plenty with much higher stats. who did not get it though). Clearly they aren’t really using it to cherrypick high stats. students but to a certain extent, because that number means that a decent amount of them are not at the 75% of “admitted” students (which is apparently a 1510 or something. If you did a crude average, that score=740/section which comes to 1480 for a mean). The GPA, on the other hand, for unweighted, is indeed quite high. Stats. wise, that makes it less selective than top public school honors programs. However, it’s actually somewhat refreshing that they are looking for much more than “over 1500” (good multiple choice test takers are a dime a dozen at these schools, and even a 1300 indicates high aptitude MC test taking ability). Now they just need to try harder to apply the same philosophy to the rest of the applicant pool.

Okay I have good and bad news for you, first good news there is a Math & CS Major which is both majors in one and is not very challenging at all to finish (it is maybe 2-3 more classes then the regular CS major) so smile, on the other hand I do not think you will be in contention for the scholars program but again that is only my impression. I think admissions and scholarships is up to the luck of your draw, so it is a possibility but personally I do not think you will make it to become a finalist. I am sorry for being so negative in this second part, but YAY the Math/CS major thing (this gets you thinking if you want to also do Emory’s 5 year BS/MS program)

When will I have to submit CSS profile for Emory scholar ? My D told me that she received an email from emory to submit financial information. She applied as a RD and so I thought I can submit the financial info early next year.

The CSS profile is not due until March 1st if you applied for Emory Scholars Regular Decision. If you applied for it in either of the ED rounds then the CSS Profile needs to be submitted by that deadline.

I just called Emory admission and Financial aid offices. Emory scholar consideration doesn’t require any of financial documents (CSS, FAFSA, and IDOC). All of them are for financial aid and due by early next year, not for Emory scholar. Thanks for your help. :)

I applied RD+Scholars too! Do any of you know a specific date that we can expect to hear back from about our admission decisions for RD, scholars aside? I heard late December and now I’m hearing late January, so I’m a little confused.

Per Emory web site, Emory scholar finalist notification in laste January and interview in late February. RD decision release will be in late March.

good luck everyone tht applied to emory scholars!! the pool seems to be really strong every year especially on the stats side (3.9+, 2200/33+) and ECs are always tops so i hope tht all of us here on CC get in!!

Anyone know of the numbers or rate of people that get the invite to go to scholars weekend? Luke what percent of accepted people or what number total that get the invite… Etc?
