What is the social life like at Emory? Is it completely dominated by the frat scene? Any thoughts from current students would be appreciated!

Is it completely dominated by the frat scene?

Mostly. The social life revolves around frats.

You can make friends, of course, and do anything you want together -- whether on campus or within the greater area of Atlanta, but as far as the "social scene" of the community as a whole, the frats are really dominant.

There are occasional campus events -- performances, speeches, campus wide movie nights, dorm social events, dances, etc. I must stress again, however, that the social scene as a whole revolves around the frats.

I don't think joining clubs, volunteering, etc. counts as part of the social scene, but this is an excellent way to make friends and have fun.

I'm not sure they 100% dominate the social scene.. i hardly go to frat row and I still go out every weekend.. but they are definitely the default for people's weekend plans. there are alternatives though, for example misedukated usually sponsors at least one emory event a week.

Is the frat scene the stereotypical kind depicted in Animal House?

The all-Greek GPA is higher than the all school GPA. the all-fraternity GPA is higher than the all-male GPA. The all-sorority GPA is higher than the all-female GPA. Every house has above a 3.0 GPA. The people that are in Greek life, in my opinion, are the leaders in the school. The majority of the Orientation Leaders, the Student Government Association exec members, and Athletes are in Greek Life. These are just three examples, but they represent a huge cross section of the University.

You will find people whose lives are balanced between academics, social life, and extracurriculars in Greek life, not the people who want to be in the library 10 hours a day. On the surface, you walk down the Row (which is one of the most beautiful and oldest parts of campus) on a Saturday night and you will see college kids in their element, probably with a Beast in their hand, but people don't stop to realize that these are also some of the most involved and successful kids academically at Emory.

So yes, we party. But we are also on the Dean's List.

I don't think the frat scene is as dominant as people say. I never really even hear anything about the frats or parties unless I'm with people who are constantly around that atmosphere. I tried a couple of parties on frat row and to be honest, I, along with several of my friends, thought they were pretty lame so we never go anymore. Then there were a couple of my friends who loved it. If you refuse to do anything that requires going off campus, then yes, frats will probably play a major role in your social life. However, if you don't mind looking for something to do off campus with your friends, then it won't and you really won't care about them. Basically, it all depends on you personally. Greek life is as prevalent as you make it. There is no such thing as lack of a social life just because you don't affiliate yourself with a fraternity/sorority.
