Emory Social Life?

I've heard characterizations of Emory ranging from "party school", "heavy frat scene", "always active" to "stifled", "lacking in school pride", "inactive". Can some current/former students or prospective students with experience in this give me their take on this?

Lacks in school pride, but if you want to get drunk, theres plenty of places to do that on campus.

Its not a party school, the kids work really hard during the week, and on the weekends (Friday and Saturday nights) get wasted.

Would it look weird if I wore an Emory sweatshirt and other Emory gear around campus? Would I look like I was trying too hard to be peppy and have school pride?

Parliament:
Are you joking? EVERYBODY where’s Emory sweatshirts and apparel. When people say Emory doesn’t have school spirit, they just mean that most students don’t turn out to athletic events.

Party school? Verdict: Partly true
Emory is not a party school in the traditional sense… you don’t have a large group of students who “major in partying” and skip all of their classes like you do at a state school. Students at Emory work hard and the play hard, and that’s the truth.

Heavy frat scene? Verdict: True
Almost 45% of Emory’s student body is greek. The greek social scene is important on campus. There’s almost always a frat party going on during the weekends. Although the frat scene dominates the on-campus social scene, there’s plenty else to do on campus and Atlanta nightlife offers TONS of incredible stuff to do.

Always Active? Verdict: True
Anywhere you go, good weather will bring people out and about. And at Emory, good weather is in supply much more often than not. During the fall and spring Emory’s campus is buzzing with life. Between music, food, and freebies every Wednesday for “Wonderful Wednesday,” students catching some rays sunbathing or tossing a frisbee on McDonough, there’s pretty much always activity on campus.

Lacking in school pride? Verdict: The truth, but not the whole truth
Emory lacks school spirit when it comes to athletics. Turnout to basketball games and athletic events is low. But regardless of school spirit in the athletics sense, Emory students have a great sense of community, and students are proud to flaunt their Emory apparel.

Stifled? Inactive? Verdict: False, False
Emory students might not have the most school spirit, but they channel that energy into everything else.

Well said, icfireball.

That was a great post, and everything I was looking for. Thank you.
