Will you guys chance me? I’m entering my junior year at a state university, UWG, and I’m really trying to get into Emory for the Spring 2016 semester. I’ve already completed 50 hours (and, in fact, I’ll have 88 by the time I leave my current school–but I’m okay with a little extra practice, I guess), so I don’t have to submit my SAT or ACT scores, which, to be honest, are a little less than I had hoped for in the first place (but still above average).
My demographics:
I’m a white, Christian male
HS GPA: 3.65 (unweighted)
GPA: 4.00
Major: English (and I currently have a double major in Art History)
Discipline interests: Queer theory, feminist theory, ecocriticism, gender studies, critical race theory
Career goals: I want to work in a university (which is the primary reason I want to transfer–Emory would better prepare me for a good graduate program)
Extracurricular activities: theatre throughout high school (with state honors–otherwise I wouldn’t mention it), Supplemental Instruction on campus, volunteer service at a laboratory on campus, literary publications, and some conference attendance.
Financial Aid: Full Pell Grant and HOPE scholarship, but no contributions from either of my parents.
I’m so, so nervous, but I’m lucky to have two great recommendation letters: one from a professor who taught there and with whom I worked as a student aide and another from two-time Emory alumnus with connections to their English program.
After reading similar posts on here, I feel somewhat discouraged because I see I’m up against applicants from top-50 universities and people that come from money.
Thank you so much, you guys! I really appreciate any and all feedback.
I would really appreciate some feedback if you guys have any idea. I’ve browsed transfer posts for previous semesters, and I think I can contend with my current stats. I just need to know if my attending a state school has left me dead in the water, even if I have a 4.0 and am active in the Honors College. Please chance me.
Yes, if I’m being honest a <Top 50 University may raise eyebrows in the admissions room, but I think since you have a 4.0 it makes up for it. I wouldn’t sweat it, maybe you could go a little more in depth about your EC’s are and how they supplement your career goals?
Anyway here are my stats:
