accepted - 3.7 gpa, Sophomore transfer, 28 ACT. Rejected from Umich and Bowdoin.

Does anyone know how good financial aid is at emory?

I know this is desperate, but is it appropriate to call them and ask why was I rejected?

Accepted into CAS; will transfer into business!
College GPA: 3.96
HS GPA: 3.6 UW
Test Scores: ACT 32, SAT Math 2 760
ECs: Research, student government, executive board
Hooks: None, I’m Asian

@savasa probably not. I think that is what people use this forum for, I doubt emory will give you a reason that satisfies your wants.

They have decent financial aid. My son was accepted in fall 2017 and it wasn’t as good as UNC Chapel Hill’s or Vassar’s, but it was 3rd best. BTW, my son applied as a transfer for Fall 2018,after already being accepted in last Fall with a 3.5 gpa, 4.63 weighted, 33 ACT, Eagle Scout, worked 16-20 hours a week, Club and HS soccer and other EC’s - this time he had all that plus a 4.0 in the Honors program, LOR from Chem professor and Calculus 3 professor, both whom he worked very closely with, made Dean’s list, tutors homeless children weekly, is on the D3 Club Roller Hockey Team , more EC’s and works FWS - and was rejected this time - totally shocked! Luckily he had already decided to stay where he is,

I was accepted to CAS this afternoon, too! College GPA: 4.0; HS GPA: 3.9; ACT waived; ECs: community service, leadership roles, classical piano, etc. Congrats everyone!!

Decision: ACCEPTED

Stats:
SAT/ACT: 1500+/34
GPA: 3.9+ (Public Ivy)
Reason for transferring: VERY STRONG

@hopeful112 wish you the best luck! Sounds like you have good stats and I think it’s a matter of colleges taste really … can be unpredictive… don’t lose hope !

where do we accept our decisions?

@transfer0611 Thanks  Yeah, I’m surprised people were rejected with 4.0s and accepted with 3.5s. I’m curious to see what they were looking for. And I am a little bummed because I also just got rejected by Vanderbilt yesterday too xD. Crossing my fingers it goes well for the rest of the schools though.

@hopeful112 : A range of things. It wouldn’t make sense to just take everyone with the highest stats(what do they have to gain? They don’t get included in incoming stats). They probably do not want to waste time on those not really as interested in yielding or may have been able to see who would just benefit more from Emory/fit in well (Emory is honestly not one of those “I fit all students” type of schools. In fact, you also applied to VU. It is hard to find many students that actually fit at both VU and Emory. They are similar caliber academically, but way different in terms of social and intellectual vibe and still have quite a few demographic differences). A range of COLLEGE gpas can likely make the transition to Emory academically, so they likely want to account for motive of coming and other things that predict whether they will more fully engaged Emory academically and socially or may just be looking for a general “upgrade” to the diploma they get in the end. Emory is also extremely holistic in freshman admissions versus other elite privates. I don’t know why people would expect differently with the much smaller transfer applicant pool.

@bernie12 not sure if I should take that post as trying to be informing, or condescending, but thanks I guess

@hopeful112 : A little of both(but the 2nd not directed you…I will give you a hint: There is a pure prestige chaser in this thread. I ain’t dropping names)…I am reminding people that it is a very holistic process. And they have to seriously take into account fit:

Emory yields less than a 1/3 of transfers as it does with freshman admits. And more specifically, you have to remember that not all GPAs are created equally no matter the amount of credits (with a smaller app. pool, they may get to scrutinize transcripts far more thoroughly). While I doubt they take the school of origin into account as much, I imagine a scheme somewhat like this:those coming from 2 year or so called “less prestigious” schools may be more likely to be given a chance depending upon their reasons for transfer (seems like those who either want to shift gears completely or major in something not offered at their current school have had higher chances even if “imperfect”). It may also depend on academic program. Like if you want to do GBS, they may be reluctant to admit those coming in as juniors. The same could likely be said for majors like NBB or chemistry. For those coming from other selective colleges (regardless of relative rank or type), they may be more heavily scrutinizing because they will want a damned good reason why. Others they may have just wanted some very “Emory specific” hints beyond what is marketed. To be honest, during my time there, I likely met more transfers from flagship and non-flagship public schools and community college, than say, other selective/elite privates, or the most elite publics. I guess they like giving the opportunity to those with “potential” who may more clearly benefit from an “upgrade” and directly expressed things that are kind of Emory specific.

And the reason I said the Emory-VU thing is because many freshman and transfer applicants do seem to just lump several of these selective research privates together as if they will just pick any one of them if admitted (so if only admitted to Emory, they will go) because they are all “prestigious”. It is problematic because Emory is a much different feel from its competitors. One is more likely to fit places like WUSTL, JHU, Brandeis, and some other schools if they like Emory, than they are say…UVA, UNC-chapel Hill, Vanderbilt, Duke, or Georgetown. Lots of freshmen and transfer applicants cross-apply at the latter places though and it kind of concerns me. Generally, it seems Emory should be removed from their lists because the others are more alike. There may be some that see it for all of them or could fit at all. But most who seem to have the others higher up on their list seem to not like Emory all that much if they choose it. I would argue that even a less prestigious public school would have made those transfers happier than going to Emory…and I am a person all for Emory. It just isn’t for everyone as much as some other schools are.

@bernie12 so would you say emory is pretty overrated in terms of academics and rankings? cuz i would def prefer vandy if they take me off waitlist. I was also curious why emory is so highly ranked because theire class profile seems less competitive and demographic data seems … so surprising from other elite schools…

@bernie12 how would you describe the overall atmosphere at Emory in comparison to Vanderbilt?
