Good dayeveryone, today I got all my admissions offers from my colleges, however, I’m down to two final colleges (mentioned in the title) and I’m still having problems making the final decision on which to accept.
With the financial aid awarded, Emory comes out to 23K and Richmond comes out to 11K
I would very much appreciate everyone’s opinions or views on each of the colleges mentioned. I’m a biochemistry pre-med major, and any opinions and advice would be greatly appreciated.
University of Richmond is a great school and saving that money will be better since you want to go on to grad school.
I second Richmond. It is in an urban area and will allow opportunities to intern. Saving that 12K each year will add up.
Emory is also close to Atlanta. It is also ranked higher (if that is important). In my opinion Emory is better, but saving the money at Richmond makes it close. Go where you will be most happy.
U Richmond has a high med school acceptance rate, much higher than the national average, along with excellent MCAT prep. I would go with UR considering the cost difference.
Thank you
Any other views and opinions are welcomed
If you’re pre-med, there is something to be said for having the Emory hospitals and medical school right on campus for research and shadowing opportunities. The CDC is adjacent to Emory’s campus and offers opportunities for Emory students including work study opportunities during the school year:
Federal Work Study Program
The CDC Federal Work-Study (FWS) Program offers students work experience in various occupations during the academic year and/or summer months. FWS at CDC exposes students to a wide range of opportunities, including public health careers. To qualify, students must be enrolled in an accredited college and awarded FWS packaging through their respective Financial Aid Office.
Eligibility
Students must apply for and be awarded federally-sponsored college work-study through their academic institution to be eligible for the work study program.
Pay and Benefits
Students receive a stipend through their school based on their year in school. Students are not eligible for federal benefits.
More Information
Students should contact their financial aid office for more information on available CDC/ATSDR work study opportunities.
URichmond also has partnerships with VCU, which has the MCV med school. Through this, they offer clinical experience. Check out their one program http://prehealth.richmond.edu/clinical-opportunities/mentors.html 4U-Mentorship. They also have volunteer connections with other local clinics/health organizations, so this experience is readily available for pre-health students.
My daughter is also considering these schools for a major in the sciences. I am concerned about the recent problem with sexual assaults on Richmond’s campus and she is now leaning toward Emory. Any thoughts on this?
@Klbfl10404 You really should create your own thread (highjacking is rude), but I’ll answer none the less. There are sexual assaults on any college campus- this is not a recent problem and not a problem with UR. However, UR is much safer in my experience than most other schools. The reason the numbers may look higher is because students feel comfortable reporting their assaults- this is a good thing, not a bad thing.
Theres a very good thread on here about this about rape specifically, but it applies to any sexual assault: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-richmond/1711746-forcible-rape.html#latest . We have excellent sexual assault training as part of orientation. We receive bystander training and accounts of actual events that happened on campus. There are also very highly regarded safety programs, anti-sexual assault programs, and survivor programs.
