[*]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?:[/ul] Even though I knew I was going to get rejected, it would have been nice if I was admitted. That way, I wouldn’t have to worry about my RD apps… Oh well, here I go again.

aamom: You need to take a deep breath and help your daughter positively re-direct her attentions towards finding herself the right school. If you would look at the stats Stevenjm posted, you would see that your rantings against Emory’s admissions decisions are indeed misplaced.

aammom i’m so sorry, but you shouldn’t blame it on emory. those SAT’s are very low, i’m no sure if taht 1190 is C+M or all 3 sections, but either way, very very low. And the EC’s you listed were fantastic, but not absolutely extraordinary

aammom: Emory rejected your daughter because her SAT is simply low. You can’t blame it on them. Some students just do not fit in at certain colleges, and Emory just did not see her as a fit. Instead of venting on cc, you should be helping your daughter find a college that she would still be happy at and would fit her academic qualifications. Good luck in the college choice. Your daughter is definitely qualified to attend some great institutions.

Despite your proclamations, emory is NOT only focused on numbers. A close friend of mine was in the middle of the pack SAT-wise and had a good GPA. However, she had one of the best Why Emory essays Ive read and great ECs. She was fully shocked when she got in and I am almost certain these things really put her over the top.

Yes, she may be an anomaly but judging by other people who have got accepted, there is more to emory than stats.

And in regards to your daughter, her sat is 1190. Sorry, but that is very low for Emory’s standards. It is still competitive institution which has to look at test scores.

So i think you should be more mad that emory cares about SATs and not legacy status, which you were obviously counting on.

[]Teacher Recs: I would think they were good. I knew one of them for 2 years and did a lot of ECs with him. The other teacher was my AP Lang teacher and apparently writes sick apps.
[]Counselor Rec: Ehh I barely knew her.
[]Hook: My essay talks about the struggles I’ve had trying to grow up with an abusive father and little money, then the suicide attempt of my mother. Also talks about how I raised my brother single handedly and worked 36 hrs/week.

[*]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: Not to sound arrogant, but I feel like I could’ve made it into a better college. But I’ve dreamed about going to Emory for a long time, so I’m still happy. Good luck to the rest of you if you were deferred or applying RD![/ul]

“from personal experience i know that many kids who start there sucuumb to the pressures of partying and flunk out. probably a product of their parents pushing them too hard to fit the mold that emory seeks.”

That is a joke. If you just show up to class every once and awhile OR read the textbook, you’re almost guaranteed a C, except in the B school and premed classes. Professors don’t fail students. It just doesn’t happen. I’ve met one person in 3 years who has ever failed a non-premed class. And he just never showed up and never did the work.

crisoliva: I think everyone has an inflated opinion of the value of the SAT. When I went for a visit, and the points they stressed most the most were the essays, rigor of courses, recs, level of interest and ECs. I think the test scores, class rank, and GPA are important more for determining your potential to keep up in that academic environment? I dunno, I’m glad. Good luck!!

[*]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: HAPPY![/ul]

to address some of the questions that are posed to me, I believe I have taken a rigorous schedule. Last year I took 1 AP (US) and got a 5 on the exam. This year, I am taking 5 aps (Ap macro econ independent). My school offers only 3 other honors courses, accel bio, accel chem, and accel physics. I have also taken all those. What is wrong with me?

and to address the class rank question, my school doesn’t rank. There are a lot of high gpa students because it is one of the top public schools in the state. I was the only one who applied ED to Emory from my school.

stevenjm your stats are amazing. I honestly don’t know why you didn’t get in, which I know sucks, but you’re going to get into a great school and be just as happy.

don’t distress man, someone as smart as you will be successful wherever they go!
