@mayankko Emory gets less apps (though still a lot) and B), it seems Emory applicants and those on its CC thread are just generally less antsy or obsessed. It is also less selective stats and admit rate wise than even its nearest peers so many people just expect to be admitted (sadly a huge chunk end up wrong). It also lags behind even academically equivalent peers in terms of popularity, so less enthusiasm from an RD pool I suppose (as in most of the types of folks on CC applying to Emory RD are probably not seriously considering it. Many more students who probably do not rely on CC as much may be more excited, but the CC crowd is different IMHO and places a premium on popularity and prestige. Many students not part of CC who are more exciting may be more like another poster on here who was applying to their in-state publics and applying to Emory as a favorite. Folks here are applying to many other elite privates). ED folks for Emory, just apply and get in an…no where near as much talk here. Guess they save it for facebook or when they hit campus. Very different culture of students and applicants. Prestige way too new vs. others and mass marketing too skimpy to generate same excitement on CC.
My D is applying RD, but she also applied for the Emory Scholars program. Those apps were due back in November. She was subsequently asked to submit a theater arts supplement, but has heard nothing from the school since. The Emory Scholars finalist selections are supposed to come out soon. Although she is applying to several other schools RD, she is very interested in Emory because as a dependent of a United Methodist minister she is eligible for a substantial tuition discount.
@Houston1021 : I think Emory uses the arts supplement as an evaluative tool looking for talent. If one is admitted, they also use it to remember the student so they can reach out more. I’ve read some documents stating how Emory eventually wants to seriously start working on yield and enrollment goals especially with President Sterk’s leadership. One way is to involve the faculty like they are now. I also know that they even have say, the chemistry department and math department doing recruiting of scholars now, which means that Emory is at least trying to yield more academically focused or “pointed” applicants. It has paid off already.
@ilikesporks : I believe they solicited certain students for it. I do not know how they selected. Could mainly be people who checked the Scholars consideration box.
Unlike some schools that have a slide room or invite all applicants to submit arts supplements, Emory apparently reviews the ECs in the submitted applications and then asks for a supplement if they want one. My daughter and one of her friends got the request for a theater supplement after they submitted their RD applications in November before the Emory Scholars deadline.
i believe the deadline to apply for Emory Scholars was back in November even if you were applying RD. The notifications are not out yet for that program. I don’t know whether they give any other merit aid.
@Houston1021: I know they give out liberal arts and some specialty (debate, music) scholarships (which often cover about 1/3 tuition and fees), but I am not sure if those were folks who they just liked or if they were folks who checked the box and they liked. I just know that LA scholars did not have to go through the interview round like others (music and debate do though I believe).
How many people will get accepted to Emory RD in total in early February through the scholars thing? I heard its Finalists+other merit awards and that there are 150-200 Finalists but how many others win smaller merit awards and hear of a decision then?
@allima : Uhm…yes. Most admitted students naturally will not receive a scholarship. There are like 5k total admits and only a few hundred merit scholar winners.
