Where else you are applying or have already applied:
Accepted: Boston College, University of Miami, University of Virginia, Tulane, University of Alabama, Texas Christian University, Boston University, Emory
Awaiting: Vanderbilt, USC, NYU, UNC Chapel Hill
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: Don’t be discouraged if you don’t make it into your college, you’ll get in a good place that fits you. Higher education should be about the experience rather than the prestige.

Accepted at both Emory College and Oxford!! Also, Oxford w/ a Liberal Arts Scholarship!
ACT: 32, unweighted GPA: 4.54, 15 APs – very rigorous coursework

also I was accepted to BC and their honors program!

withdrew after accepted EDII to another school but still accepted to oxford and Waitlisted Emory RD! Sorta surprised. that didn’t get in Emory. Had 3.9 GPA, 1530 SAT, 8APs and good ECs. Well, I’m going to Tufts!

Accepted Emory did not apply to Oxford. ACT 31, SAT 1440 both in one sitting. Also accepted UNC & BU. Many leadership positions and work experience.

@mathandpremed12 : That isn’t that valid a theory only going based on last years stats. Emory has always had yield like that and has always denied high stats applicants while also accepting a ton (it always admits at about the same level of stats). The question is: what exactly differentiates the super high stats applicants who are admitted versus those who are not? Who the heck knows?

Interestingly, even places with higher yield and much higher stats tend to place a huge chunk of the high stats applicants on the waitlist so this isn’t new. The picture is much more complex and even random than any theory we tend to boil it down to.

Anyone beyond a 34 is a high risk/low yield applicant for Emory yet they accepted a solid amount of them. They may also take into account how many times one took it (Emory de-emphasizes scores relative to comparable privates so may not like when high scorers take the test another or even 2 more times for an even higher score)

The point is you should not look at your stats and “expect” to get into any of these schools. They will have a solid threshold of high scoring applicants to fulfill that need so while it is less random for high stats applicants, many are still denied. There were of course other whites and Asians in this very thread with similar stats who not only were accepted but received a scholarship so that theory is out.

waitlisted
not surprised though, my test scores aren’t great
SAT: 1350/1600
Class rank: Top 6%
Applied only to Emory, not Oxford
Extracurriculars: Editor of school paper, 3 varsity sports, president of Student Council, hospital and American cancer society volunteer, etc.

Accepted to University College London, KCL, Northeastern, and American so far, waiting on NYU, Georgetown, GWU, and rejected from Boston University

@AnxiousEloise

University College London?! I think you’ll be ok.

General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: Applying is stressful, dont compare yourself to others, whatever happens, happens… this website is a good resource especially if you’re like me who does not have that much guidance from parents and peers about college, but don’t get caught up with stats. These are really just numbers and a few vague things about me as an applicant. Based on what I read from this website i did not think I’d get in to the more selective schools, let alone an IVY. It will all work out for the best and any college is still going to be better than high school! It’s what YOU make of it:))

Waitlisted to both Emory and Oxford OOS
ACT: 23
GPA: 3.7
Essays and EC’s: exceptional
Hooks: URM, Low income
Other Comments:
Emory is an amazing school and it would be an amazing opportunity to be able to attend. Even though the chances of being admitted from the waitlist are slim, I am going to keep an optimistic attitude towards the process.

Strengths: Writing
Weaknesses: Stats
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Essays and Teacher Recs
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: I didn’t think I would get into either, but I felt like I had more of a chance at Oxford than Emory. I am pleasantly surprised. I think the biggest thing is stats don’t mean everything. It’s very important to create a narrative within your application because it helps things flow together and make sense.

accepted at emory w 35 act in one sitting and 4.7 gpa w the $15k liberal arts college of arts and sciences 4 yr scholarship! (anyone know how many people get this? i couldn’t find any stats about it with a quick google search.) i don’t think that emory isn’t accepting high stats students, even though the risk is higher that would still be kind of ridiculous of them.

Decision: ACCEPTED at Emory, didn’t apply to Oxford

SAT I (breakdown): didn’t take
ACT (breakdown): 34
SAT II: took a few in the subjects that I’m more interested in (math II, biology, chemistry) but the scores were mediocre. mid 600s to low 700s
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.8
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): top 8%, #24 out of approx. 320
AP (place score in parenthesis): will have finished 10 AP courses by the end of this year: Biology (4), Human Geography (4), Chemistry (3), Lang (5), Physics (cancelled score), AB Calc (3). This year I’ll be taking Lit, BC Calc, Spanish, and Environmental Science
IB (place score in parenthesis): n/a
Senior Year Course Load: besides the 4 AP classes listed above, I am in Yearbook which takes up a class period at my school, and I have a hospital internship which takes up 2 periods every day
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): AP Scholar with Honor, National Merit Commendation, Honorable Mention in National Spanish Exam, Award from State of PA for a top 5,000 ACT score, Special Recognition from School District (basically you get a shout-out at a school board meeting and a certificate for something cool you did. in my case, they were impressed that i got a 36 on the english portion of the act lol), four superior/excellent rating awards at piano competitions

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Key Club (Treasurer), Leo Club (a service club specializing in helping visually impaired people), Yearbook (Editor-in-Chief), Soccer, Piano, National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, Denmark Foreign Exchange Program my junior year
Job/Work Experience: I’ve worked at Wawa (a widely loved convenience store in the Philly area) for almost 2 years now
Volunteer/Community service: I’m a volunteer at my local library, and I do a lot of work for pretty much any event at my high school through NHS
Summer Activities: honestly… I just work all the time. I think this was a huge part of my application, though. I found a job right when I turned 16, got it, and have been working regularly since then. I’ve been working very hard to save my money for college and other future endeavors.
Essays (rating 1-10, details):
EMORY APP ESSAYS: The first prompt I chose was the one asking what my favorite work of art was, whether it be literature, a painting, or a performance. I picked this one right off the bat because the musical Hamilton popped into my head instantly. I know it may sound like I’m just hopping on the Hamilton bandwagon here, but I really personalized it and portrayed what the musical meant to ME and how it impacted my outlook on life. I explained how deeply the musical’s messages regarding the human condition resonated with me after I was fortunate enough to see it. Also I mentioned how intriguing the contrasting perspectives were between Hamilton and Burr–how they were so like-minded yet polar opposites all at once. Prolly a solid 7 essay.
Second prompt was about the type of academic environment that I thrive in. Key things I mentioned were: other students who love learning for the sake of learning, people who I can 100% be myself around, and sophisticated individuals who bring unique perspectives to the table and push me to think about ideas I never would normally. I liked the way my words flowed in this one and I think it truly showed what I’m looking for in the college I attend. It’s a 9 from me
COMMON APP ESSAY: very happy with how this one turned out, I talked about the way piano is a generational thing in my family–my dad taught me from a very young age, and it has continued to shape who I am today. My dad is in an Irish band as well, so I mentioned how I would always go up to the stage at his crowded bar gigs to perform my latest songs. I tried to set a humorous scene: imagine a 7 yr old girl gracing the keys in front of a pub full of rowdy, mildly drunk people. Not the ideal environment for a kid my age, but I loved it and it’s a memory that I look back upon with a smile… it was my first real experience performing, and it’s something uniquely me. 9/10 essay
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Really confident in both recs, soo I’ll give them a 7-8 collectively. One is from my AP Chem/homeroom teacher who I see every day. We’ve had a great relationship over the years and I did very well in chemistry with him. Second rec is the one I am most confident in because it comes form my AP Lang teacher who also happens to be the head of yearbook (I am the EIC this year). She knows a lot about my strong love for health science and she has a whole lot to say about my strengths in writing. Lang is, after all, the only exam I’ve received a 5 on. This woman is an amazing person who I have the closest relationship with out of any of my teachers.

Counselor Rec: probably generic, but I did have a meeting with my counselor and told him specifically which aspects of my personality/academic career I wanted him to write about in my letter. I’m assuiming that helped some
Additional Rec: n/a
Interview: no interview

Other: something that I’m very proud of this year is an internship I have at my local hospital. It’s through a class called Allied Health, and I’m gaining many hours of clinical experience, getting the same kind of insight that college nursing students do, just at an earlier age. I think this is something unique that could possibly interest an admissions officer, as it is a rare program in terms of a high school student getting hands-on hospital experience three days a week.

Applied for Financial Aid?: yes, haven’t heard back yet. Lord KNOWS I need some help if I’m going to attend Emory
Intended Major: human health
State (if domestic applicant): Pennsylvania
Country (if international applicant): n/a
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: Not totally sure… I live around some very wealthy people but my family’s income is lower than a lot of the ones around us
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None tbh

I’ve also been accepted at the University of Pittsburgh Honors Program and Northeastern University. Rejected from Georgia Tech.
HUGE congratulations to everyone accepted! To those waitlisted/denied, I know how it feels. You CAN and WILL do amazing things regardless of where you go. Opportunity is everywhere!

WOW^ that is a super long post. Did not intend for that to happen… sry
