@sagaciousforever and @kcasssuu : This is tricky as several of Emory’s higher ranked peers (which BTW were near ranked the same as Emory 5-10 years ago. Rest assured that they did not actually become “better” than Emory. Most simply changed their freshman admissions scheme and enhanced marketing to put on a front and it worked for the rankings!), have higher transfer admit rates than Emory. I am talking other top 12-20 schools especially (which is what Emory actually best compares to because all but UCLA are medium sized private schools. Furthermore, freshman admissions at Emory over the past 5 years has more or less converged with about 1/2 of this crew. The other 1/2 basically are stats whoring or effectively going/went out of their ways to suddenly drive up applicant volume and crash the admissions rate).
These schools kind of gamed rankings by using very stringent admissions at the “front door” and then use transfer admissions to fill the student body out (the amount of transfers they take cannot simply be explained by retention rates as these same schools have higher retention rates than Emory). I wouldn’t classify the transfer admissions by ranking tier because there are too many exceptions. We can just simply say that at Emory, transfer admissions is far more likely than freshman admissions. There are a group of schools like this, and then there are a group of schools that take the same or much less (or basically no) transfers. The transfer admissions scheme should not be compared to other similar caliber schools, especially public schools (or large privates like USC that have a notable IS bias more so than most other elite privates) which will also factor in OOS versus IS status.
@bernie12 I agree with you that Emory is on the same caliber as top 25 school such as USC and UCLA.
However, I think transfer student body’s stats will not affect a college’s ranking.
By the way, Emory is releasing the admission decision next Wednesday. Do you know what time it will be? 3pm? 5pm? It is based on Atlanta’s time zone right?
Why would they base it on anything other than eastern time zone? For incoming freshmen, it’s always 6 pm.
@ljberkow Thanks. What about transfers? Usually what time will it be released in EST?
@sagaciousforever : I didn’t say any of that. I am saying that the transfer in admit rates have NOTHING to do with USNWR ranking brackets whatsoever so there is no reason to characterize them in such a context. There are top 20. 15 w/e schools with higher transfer in rates. It depends on the strategy and needs of the school. I was pointing out that the amount of transfers they can take in can sometimes be linked to how stringent their freshman admissions are…and freshman admissions do effect the rankings. Some school may have extremely stringent freshman admissions to impress ranking agencies, and then end up using transfer admissions to further fill their cohorts.
@ljberkow No worries. I found it on the portal. It’s 3pm EST next Wednesday.
Can transfers be done during freshman year
You need to complete the year ?
Emory Admission is also on Twitter. It is interesting that they post dates and times of freshmen admissions but not transfers. It’s great that you found it and good luck.
@ljberkow Thanks! By the way, have you heard of Emory OPUS?
How early will Emory update the OPUS (From “Academics” to “My Academics” if you are likely to be admitted)? Is it 24 hours before the admission decision? So let’s say Emory’s release time is 4/24, 3pm (EST), will I find some updates on OPUS by 4/24, 3pm (EST)?
Emory OPUS is a website that helps you to find out the admission decision before they send it out. Based on threads in the past few years, it is extremely accurate.
If applicants get “My Academic” in the OPUS portal, they are admitted.
Mine still says “Academics”
On OPUS, Does anyone have stuff on their “to do list” despite receiving an email saying that their financial aid application was received?
@36Biscuit It has to be very close to the decision release date for the “Academics” on OPUS to be changed. I would say maybe we will find out next Tuesday (a day before the release).
My son is a freshman, so I’ve heard of OPUS. I’m not so sure that it was updated before the 6 pm release by Emory.
What is OPUS? I found the website but I can’t log in
Where is ‘Academics’ on OPUS?
What is OPUS??? I feel like I am missing something??
Do you mean the ‘Academics’ in the section of ‘OPUS Help’
@RTCRTCRTC Yes, it’s in “OPUS Help”. Based on past years thread, If you get a “My Academics” (usually shows in OPUS couple hours or even 24 hours before Emory releases the decision), it’s a sign that you will gain admission.
@SMSNYAL Go to past years Emory transfer threads for details (just search up OPUS after clicking the keyword search button). Emory OPUS basically gives you some signs, telling you the admission results in advance before the release date (usually couple hours or even up to a day).
@RTCRTCRTC You have to register a new account using your email address (the one that you applied to Emory) and the Emory ID (you can find it in the Emory’s portal).
I registered a couple days ago but until not still no “my academics” tab
