Hi,
I'm currently deciding between Emory Scholars (virtually free), Cornelius Vanderbilt (virtually free), and Yale with no aid.
I'm pre-med and live near Atlanta.
Any opinions would be greatly appreciated!

Virtually free usually rules. Both Emory and Vandy are great schools and I have heard nice things about Emory for premed.

If you are premed, I would go with Emory or Vandy. Are your parents willing to pay for Yale? If so, ask them if they’ll pay for med school instead.

Run a search for threads by curmudgeon. His daughter turned down Yale for a full ride elsewhere and now is at Yale Med. She has absolutely no regrets about following the money.

I agree with the others, Emory or Vandy. Vandy if you feel the need to get away from home.

Save your (your parent’s) $$ for med school.

See the recent post in the premed forum.

Emory and Vanderbilt have very different environments. Both are in good cities and have nice campuses. Vanderbilt has SEC sports, which can be really fun if you care about that. Emory is not D1 and doesnt’ have a football team, which makes for a different college experience.

Thank you for your helpful responses! That was definitely our line of thinking as well. I don’t think I can place financial burden on my family.
Between Emory Scholars and Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholars, do you guys have any opinions on which is the better fit/more reputable program?
Thanks!

They both have great pre-med. Vandy has a slightly higher prestige, but they’re both great schools. There’s no wrong decision here.

If they are both scholarships, not sure that should be your concern. Once you got money, that is the end of the story and reputation ends at the point of entry. You should look into the schools to see which one feels more comfortable with and what features of the scholarship appeal to you.

Emory scholar needs a 3.2+ for renewal
Vandy needs 3.0+ for renewal

I doubt you’ll have problems meeting that considering you are pre-med.

wait idgi are you saying its hard to get a 3.2 at emory??

No, I just checked out the requirements for scholarship renewal for you. They seem trivial, but nevertheless listed them.

The point I’m trying to make is that you need to have a in depth look at the scholarships and their conditions and benefits.

ohh haha ok thanks

You can’t go back to undergraduate years once they’re done and you can’t put a price tag on experiences. If you feel that your experiences at Yale will by far surpass your experience at Emory or Vandy, think about it. Finances are obviously really important (and the practical considerations tip the scale in Emory and Vandy’s favor by a good margin), but they don’t necessarily exceed in importance how you’d feel about sacrificing a possibly more prestigious/enriching experience because finances will eventually be resolved, but feelings may never be.

There is only so much money. If the OP has his/her parents pay for Yale (I’m assuming they will here) and they don’t have money to pay for med school, that is a significant amount of debt to take on. It will lead to lower quality of life later on. Not a low quality of life, but a lower one. There will not be as much money for a down payment on a house, nice cars, retirement funding, OP’s children’s education, etc.

It’s not like Emory and Vandy aren’t competitive and prestigious. There is absolutely no reason the OP can’t have just as satisfying of an experience at one of these two schools.

Fleurs

First – what school do you want to go to. Both Vandy and Emory are great schools. If they are your preference, with a virtually free ride, it’s hard to turn down.

Otherwise – this is a discussion you have to have with your parents. Is Yale a feasible option. If so, what does it mean about their ability to help you with Med School? What does it mean to their retirement? Other siblings go to school?

IMO – if you’re good enough to get these major scholarships at Emory or Vanderbilt, I think that your chances at Med School are excellent no matter where you go. I don’t think Yale would make that big a difference.

However, I confess, that IF (BIG IF) I could swing it, I would recommend my child go to Yale undergraduate over either of your other choices and I would be willing to make sacrifices so that my child could do so.
