I am a RD candidate for Emory class of 2022. On my common app, I listed singing as an extracurricular. I did a few singing competitions in my 9th and 10th-grade years (where I did pretty well) and a couple of plays. A few weeks ago, the Emory music department sent me an email requesting I submit a recording of a vocal performance. The only professional recording I have is of me singing in a performance of “The Wiz” a year ago. Unfortunately, I am not the best singer, and I really just do it for fun. This recording, while not terrible, will certainly not stand out from any other performers. I am not applying for a music major or anything like that. Do you think it is worth submitting? I don’t want it to hurt my chances.
@hhootle : I don’t know. They aren’t expecting you to be Whitney Houston or something lol. They just want to see if you could be add to the choir, theater, or general music scene. You need not be a major to take many music courses or become a part of that scene. If you don’t want to, then don’t I guess. They may just do that to decide who they want to consider for music scholarships as well as determine who they want to immediately target to be part of some aspect of the music scene at Emory. They are looking at the whole application to see the places where you may fit into the community. Also, you do not know who the other performers are in the app. pool.
I also received this request but I couldn’t submit a recording within the deadline listed on the email (just over a week after I received the email). I replied to the email and notified them that I was still very interested in Emory’s vocal programs. Does this request/my response indicate anything about my chances of admission?
