Emory vs Lehigh (Major- Business)

Hi guys. I am international student and got accepted to both Emory and Lehigh. I want to major in Business, and I am so confused !! I cant choose between these universities. What do you think which one has better business program and which one is better when it comes to business?

Thanks in advance!

This doesn’t seem like a difficult question. Emory is a top 20 national university in Atlanta with a top business school; Lehigh is a top 40 national university with an unranked business school at least 75 minutes outside of Philadelphia.

Hi. Thanks for your response. As I already said I want to major in business. Do you thing there is a big difference between Oxford college and emory college for the first two years ? And do you know how hard it is to get into Goizueta business school after two years? Thanks!!

Emory is very, very good. Lehigh is better than described above, however. Lehigh is about an hour drive to NYC AND Philly. If you want a great job or graduate school, you will not be disadvantaged at Lehigh. Lehigh is ranked #35 top undergrad business program vs Emory’s #5. Emory has 91% job placement, Lehigh 96%. Emory starting salary $60k, Lehigh $57k. Lehigh ranks #12 in ROI, Emory ranks #145 (if you’re buying into rankings).

I would pick Emory

Do you think the difference of 30k I have to pay in case I choose emory is worth of the difference between emory and lehigh? (Lehigh gave me about 35k while emory didn’t give me any aid/scholarship)

What will be your net cost for each school? Does that matter to you? Do you like (or want to avoid) cold and snow?

If I go to Emory I would have to pay 30k more than at Lehigh. Since my parents are paying for my education, it matters a lot. I don’t know if it’s worth of paying 30k and going to emory instead of going to Lehigh thus paying 30k less.

30k times 4 years, plus inflation. Both schools are excellent, but no way is Emory worth over $120K more than Lehigh.

Being a lover of both schools, i got to say that emory is the better school and has the better business program. However, Lehigh is another great school and i would go there if the cost difference was that big.

Emory is much, much better than Lehigh for business.

Pay the money to come here.

^with all due respect, aluminum, only someone with no knowledge about Lehigh would claim that Emory is “much, much better”. Ask around Wall Street. Lehigh is an outstanding and highly respected business school. Emory is excellent, but if it’s better than Lehigh (debatable and unquantifiable), it’s not by much.

This is the first test of OP’s business acumen. Two highly respected business schools, both assumed to be a good fit, both will give him a first rate education. One costs $120,000 more than the other. You’re going to be a businessman. Do the math.

Yea, I went too far.

Thanks for you help! I appreciate it!

I have couple more days to decide…

I am making the exact same decision that you are right now. Here are some of the things that I am considering when making my decisions

  1. At Lehigh you are already in the business school and at Emory you have to apply to it. So, there is a chance that at Emory you may not get your major. Is that something you want to risk? Emory definitely has the better business program, but both are extremely well respected and would get you a great job after college.
  2. Would you prefer to live in the NY-PA area after college or the Atlanta area?
  3. What type of people do you want on campus? Emory is much more diverse than Lehigh, but both have very nice people. Lehigh also has a huge Greek life scene.
    I hope this helped :)

I’m a student at Emory (non-business) and my brother is about to graduate in May from Lehigh’s computer science and business program. I’m obviously biased, but you knew what you were getting into when you posted on the Emory page :)

Money aside, I’d definitely choose Emory. Better business program, better school overall (simply by rankings). Where do you want to live after college? It’s true that Lehigh is near NYC and Philly, but Emory’s in Atlanta, meaning there are more opportunities for internships and jobs while you’re in college. Lehigh is in Bethlehem, which doesn’t offer anywhere near the opportunities that Atlanta does.

However, since money is a factor, I’d choose Lehigh-- also a great choice! Good luck!

Thanks for you responses!

Except money, one more thing I was concerned about was getting into business school. As I know, while at Lehigh you are already in the business school, at Emory you have to apply to it. I’m afraid that I might not get business major in case I don’t get into goizueta business school. Do you think it hard to get into Goizueta?

From what I’ve heard, it’s not hard at all considering they only take students from Emory. 70% of applicants are accepted to the school.

I attended a top 10 college in the North East. Even so, rankings mean nothing to me. Those relying on rankings are basing their decisions on a system that is rife with errors.

Take this: for the last thirteen years, Emory has misrepresented their admissions statistics, intentionally fabricating the mean SAT score as well as misrepresenting the percentage of students who came from the top 10% of their high school class (87% vs the true 75%). Why they are still included in the USNews rankings is beyond me. I would never trust a school that engages in such unethical practices.

So if we can’t trust these rankings, then what can we do? We must make use of the data available to us. For one, Lehigh’s employment rate upon graduation is a whooping 96%, compared to Emory’s 91%–if this is even the true statistic. Moreover, Lehigh is tied with MIT for Return on Investment (ROI); Emory barely makes the top 100. These are the metrics that matter.

Best of luck with your decision. I know what mine would be.

Snaps for you.

As USNews noted, it’s because the misrepresentation, once corrected, would not have led to a change in ranking.

Payscale doesn’t have a representative sample. ROI is also dependent on your particular situation. Finally, your salary is also highly coordinated with where you live.
