Alright so I got into both - just found out this week. And while Emory is the dream school Ive always wanted to go to, it may be the dream school I wanted to go to as a freshman. My whole family (mostly extended) is from Miami and I have a strong foundation there. I plan on going to law school and Im a junior transfer so I think this strong foundation may keep me focused for the next few (short) years. Any suggestions or personal opinions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Well UM has the best Law School in Florida right now. if u say u have such strong foundations in Miami and really want to practice law in Miami or elsewhere in Florida, then going to UM might not be a bad idea.
Im sure UM's Law School gives consideration to UM Alumni when admitting Law Students.

UM law is second tier. UF is by far the best law school in the state. I would not want to attend Miami for law school by any means. I still feel the strongest components of Miami as a university are undergrad in general and Medicine in the primary care field.

Well if u look at the average starting salaries for UM Law grads compared to UF Law Grads, there is a big diference.
UM law grads earn $80,000 while UF grads earn $58,000. there is a huge difference. thats why I concluded that UM is a better place to study law than Miami. but hey thats my opinion.

Back on track:

why dont u ask urself this: you used to see Emory as your dream school.
ur now a JUnior in college, what benefits do u see in it now?
At UM, u have family and apparently feel more comfortabe in that location. any other benefits?

acarta - thanks for breakdown

as for UM law, they got you with their statistics by placing their private sector salary. UF's overall is roughly 60k whereas Miami's overall is the national avg roughly 40 something. UF is first tier, much more selective, etc. Then again, if you want to work in Miami (which I would not mind at all), UM is the better bet for sure.

Yeah youre right I need to sit there and weigh the differences. Heres the thing Im a social guy and I feel that Im going to spend my junior year socializing more than I should because Im starting a new life in Atlanta at Emory. I feel that Im more grounded in Miami so socializing would kind of sprout organically. Thats probably my largest concern.

I think you should stick with Emory as far as academics go in general. What are you studying?

Look Emory has better academics nobody will deny that. Do I know ppl that have picked UM over Emory? yes. Again if u want only academics then pick emory.
If u wanna weigh location, social life etc... then look at Miami.

I really dont wanna tell u "go with Miami" cause well im going there this fall and im going to be extremely biased by doing so.

Emory has better academics. thats the only benefit for u cause socializing there wont be easy as ur transferring as a Junior. But again, many would tell u, go to college for an education, not to socialize. I like a balance (thats me). Emory would have given u an excellent social scene if u would have started as a freshman. Now its a lil dfferent.

Miami athough is still very good academically it does not match up to Emory's quality. Miami in ur case will provide a more easily accessible social scene and well everyone knows that Miami is a really exciting city.
