Emory and UGA honors are the only 2 schools I applied to (and got into) and I am desperately trying to get some advice. I bound myself to Emory, seeing as it was my absolute first choice and dream school but my parents have gotten kinda iffy on it. I am almost 90% positive I want to go into science, chemistry more specifically, which Emory clearly excels at. However, I myself would have to pay about 10k a year (assuming i dont get a dime for scholarships) for my tuition while uga honors is free. any thoughts?

things to consider:
i really do not see myself at uga (50k students vs. 7k at emory...)
classes at uga have hundreds of kids
decent at best professors
pretty bad chemistry program (science in general is not very good there, its more business/law)
emory is just so $$ (but i apply to about 3 scholarships a week)
emory has a great chemistry undergrad program + is amazing for premed
i was nominated for emory scholars so theres a decent chance i will recieve this scholarship (full tuition) sophomore - senior year

I would go to UGA honors if I were you., especially when its free.
Emory is a good school, but its Chemistry department is really not really a top nationally ranked one.

UGA Honors hands down. Period. My sister is in the Honors College right now; she would ALWAYS complain about UGA in high school (stupid people, red neck, football atmosphere, etc.) and now she's absolutely in love. She's very bright, and kind of an "indie chic" girl - a free spirit, and she feels right at home at UGA and in Athens. Large classes aren't an issue either - she's a sophomore and her classes had 3 students, 8 students, 17 students, and 32 students last semester. She said this is, for Honors Students, quite typical.

even if emory is like my dream school? doesnt your sister regret not going somewhere she really wanted to go to? thats my biggest fear. yeah i'll save money but in the scheme of things, i really feel like i'll be happier and much more productive at emory.. its difficult

I'm going to have to say Emory. I was sort of in the same situation (not exactly, but similar) but decided that I loved Emory too much to settle for a less expensive school. It had been my dream school for awhile, and I could not imagine going anywhere else. I truly believe that finances should not get in the way of what you really want (unless you are in a terrible situation). If Emory is your dream school, then go. I'm sure you worked hard to get in. You don't want to be left wondering if you have made the right decision. Live with no regrets.

but the thing is mines not really TONS of debt which is what makes the decision sorta hard... if my debt was more than 10K a year, i would probably end up choosing uga, but i hear from so many people that 10k is nothing for a top 20 school.. i dunno thats why i made this thread. it seems that everyone here thinks that uga would be a much better choice.. i guess i just dont see why

You heard from 18 year olds that $40K is nothing? Or from us older people who have friends still paying off college debt 20 years later?

It depends how much money your family has, honestly. Only you know that. But if you are talking about personally taking on $40K of debt which you are going to have to pay off through a salary you have to earn, that's a lot of money. Especially if you are thinking about some kind of grad school.

lauren,
Emory is an outstanding school with a strong national reputation, a consistently strong student body, and great academic strength in your selected field of study. After Duke, Emory ties with Vanderbilt as the premier college in the Southeast and does an excellent job of preparing and placing its graduates. U Georgia, on the other hand, is the classic big-college, State U experience with all of the good and the bad that goes with that. Thanks to the Hope Scholarship, it is a school on the rise, but it is unlikely to reach Emory's level of academic prestige anytime soon and perhaps never.

Emory is a much smaller and different environment and I think your instincts are accurate in how you see the two colleges. I think that the choice between these two schools is pretty clear, particularly given what you are looking for in a college.

Did you apply ED to Emory? You said you "bound" yourself to Emory, I couldn't tell if you applied ED or not. If you applied ED, there is no choice to be made.

My daughter is at Emory, she was also accepted at UGA Honors and has many friends there. I think hands down Emory is the better school. I also work with someone whose daughter is a chemistry major and finds the work challenging, but doable with effort.

I assume you did not receive the Emory Scholar for freshman year? If not, you will have to apply for Emory Scholars again during your freshman year. (If you did congratulations!) If you have a full tuition scholarship, you will only have to pay room and board and books. With HOPE you will have a small additional book allowance, but you will still have to pay for room and board, unless you have received additional scholarships.

If your interest was in a field other than science, then UGa.'s Honors Program would be my recommendation. But, as an intended chemistry major, Emory University is better suited for you. UGa.'s Honors Program is, however, one of the oldest & best in the country and, therefore, is also an excellent choice for an undergraduate education. The campus cultures at Emory & Georgia are quite different. Is it possible to enroll for your first year at the University of Georgia while waiting (and reapplying) for next year's Emory's Scholars decision? Even though you may have applied ED to Emory, if you cannot afford it, you may be able to enroll at Georgia. Talk with Emory's Admission's Office for help & suggestions.

and yeah i completely agree with the person who said uga honors for any other major than chemistry. like if i was going for business, the decision would be so easy...
