So...I've narrowed my choices down to two options: UNC (instate) or Emory.

At Emory I was an Emory Scholar Semi-finalist and got a 12k/year scholarship. At UNC I'm paying instate tuition.

I want to do premed and go to a top medical school or a top MD/PhD program after graduation. I am interested in neuroscience or psychology as a major.

Which has better opportunities as far as research and as far as premed...or are they both pretty much the same? And if you think one is better than the other, then for what reasons, and if you think Emory is the better option, is it still worth an extra 15-20k a year?

Since med school admissions is strictly a matter of GPA and MCAT scores and both schools offer the prerequisite courses you'll need for med school, choose the school where you think you will get the highest GPA (and save the most money because med school is expensive.)

Have you visited both? sat in on classes? do you have lots of friends at emory? Do you need to be close to home? Do you make friends easy? Do you want to be a small fish at a big school or a bigger fish at a small school? Do you want to compete? What kind of students do you want to be around? Do you like a campus with top notch athletic teams? Do you want a campus that goes CRAZY when they win big titles? do you like urban or more small town atmospheres? do you mind not having a car? know anyone coming to UNC?

I would assume the programs are comparable. Both popular majors. High level faculty at both. Cost very different and alot of the above ver different.
BTW, my husband taught in the business school at Emory for many years.

I am wondering the same thing, though I may major in Biology. I got in OOS at UNC and at Emory. I am not sure, but if you look at the majors in Emory and UNC, Emory has more political science things and UNC has more medical/ science things. I know that Emory is hard to say no to, but I myself am not sure. I am visiting both school and I think you should to.

UNC and Emory are comparable for pre-med. Emory would do a better job of preparing you for med school and has a better rep for medicine. Also you might experience much smaller classes at Emory. If it comes down to which program is better, I would have to say Emory.

I second everything Atlmom said (except of course the husband part, lol). My son is at UNC and presently (you know how those things change) is majoring in Psych and Bio with minors in Cognitive Science and Chem. This is his first year at Carolina (transferred in as a junior from Wake). He has been impressed so far with classes in his major and though he hasn't gotten on board yet with research--there are many, many options listed for UGs.

Both schools are great--you need to sit down and address the questions Altmom listed and that will help you make your choice.

Hey there, since cost was a major concern in choosing a school, I will be a UNC premed next year. :)

I decided that Emory, while a nice school when I visited, was not worth an extra $20k per year when I still have to think about financing med school!
