Ok...i just got a somewhat surprising acceptance from emory..so now my college decision becomes a little more complicated...so really i'm down to these 3 choices....im gonna do economics and then shift towards business as my college career progresses (so mcintire at uva...and goizuetta at emory)....which one should i pick???...should i get over the fact that emory is slightly more "prestigious"..especially for a virginian..when compared to uva and wm...or is it really a better school???...honestly..i don't know much about it...not nearly as much as uva or william and mary..

You have to visit it.. The school is amazing,, people friendly, nice, buildings made of marble.. you might think you just stepped out of Kansas in the Wiz of Od.. seriously the place is so nice and people too.. do yoursellf a favor and go there to see!!!

I'm a Virginian, and I got into UVA and Emory. Emory is def. more prestigious. And Goizuetta is def. higher ranked than McIntire. Go to Emory.

Goizueta in Not higher ranked that Mcintire.
Both businessweek and USNews have ranked Mcintire higher than Goinzueta
Infact Businessweek also said that this year Mcintire actually came close to toppling Wharton ( I dont believe it but it definately shows how strong Mcintire is )
Uva has an arguably top 15-16 economcis program last time i checked.

And since you're virginian, in-state tution makes it an obvious choice)
Seriously would you rather pay $50,000 for Emory or less than $20,000 a year for UVa. you'll save a ton of money by goin to a school that might even be better.

Serious. So much more $$. And UVA has much hotter girls/guys.

wow extrabobby, thanks for your unbiased opinion, but we all know that UNC has the hottest guys/girls

but UNC want one of the schools that the OP got into

Three completely different type schools and envirnoments. You have to visit each to see which is right for you. IMO Emory>W&M>UVirgina; but that is what would be best for me. Noone else can even remotely give you good advice about this except for you and your family. Go visit and good luck. You have a problem most kids would die for.

UVA has the best social life out of three.

No, it has the biggest and loudest social life. That doesnt mean its the best for everyone. Swish is right, these are very different places that have a commonality of a bright, high-achieving student body. Other than that they are very very different. OP needs to visit all three and ask which matches them the best.

yea...im definitely gonna visit emory and wm in the next couple weeks...i've been connected to uva all throughout high school...basketball games...just stayin the night and hangin out with friends that graduated from my high school and went to uva last year...you name it...however, i really don't know anything about emory and wm...as far as student life and campus. So...does liking uva ALOT mean i probably won't like the other 2?..i've just heard that emory is such an "awesome" school...

UVA social life is hard to beat. Emory may have more to do around campus but the people at UVA are awesome. Saves you a lot of money for arguably a better education. Whatever floats your boat though.

In response to post #11: Virginia's campus is the most beautiful of the three schools. Next is William & Mary's campus. Emory University is really nice and is located in a great suburban/almost urban area of Atlanta. If you enjoy fraternity & sorority type activities, then UVa. is hard to beat. If you have to pay full cost at all three, then--unless your family has substantial assets--Virginia may be your all-around best choice.

Before you look over any of my comments...read this:
http://www.isi.org/college_guide/sample/2008/emory.pdf

I am in quite a similar place with you - got accepted both by Emory and UVA, and after visiting both of them, to be very honest, I would Emory has a slight edge against UVA. In terms of campus, I would say although UVA has the grandiose old huge building style, the management, development, and delivacies on small parts (like art, decoration, carpet, windows, etc) is not as impressive as Emory's. With a huge amount of endowment, Emory is more willing to (and indeed it does) spend a large amount of money both on refurnishing the built sturctures, making new ones, and refining the more intangibles--which leads to my next topic. UVA has a 1:20 faculty student ratio this year from what I have heard, whereas Emory around 1:7. If you are really trying to get a close and well-setup education, Emory will probably be a better choice.
In terms of sports, my comments are that Emory's sport is truly known as a "supplement to academics", meaning that the facilities are top-notched (the gym probably the best I have ever seen in college), intermurals are prevalent, and in general they will not take too much attention from the school. If this kind of atmosphere is what you are looking for, as compared to the real atheletic community in UVA, then Emory is you best choice.

Better b-school and in-state tuition. I think this is obvious.

Honestly, UVA is the best for business of the three. In my opinion, hands down. I wouldn't have thought to even apply to Emory, UVA's business program is extremely well regarded (being in-state that was basically the school for me off the bat).

I am going to hijack this thread a little bit, as I have similar circumstances. I have to decide between Emory and William & Mary for a Chemistry (premed) student. The price difference is 150k, but I really love Emory and 2 visits to William & Mary have really put me off it. It just really doesn't seem like my kind of campus, and Emory happens to be near a big city which is a big plus for me. I just wanted some advice on whether it is still a good deal to go to Emory over W&M despite the price difference.

$150,000 is alot of dough to save for med school; Unless you are rolling in it and unless you absolutely HATED W &M, IMO save your money......

recalculates debt
I end up paying $34K through student loans. Does that change anything?

it's so hard to ignore the economics.
the question is whether the student is a go with the flow type or the i will struggle getting past things type.
the former will ride the waves and get the most out of his situation.
the ladder will want transfer or will regret having not gone with the gut.
hopefully he's the former type, as the cost differential is significant.
best of luck with whatever you decide.
if you decide on emory, let me know.
