So I got into both of these schools. I plan on going into economics my first 2 years, then transfer to business school (mcintire for uva and goizueta for emory). MONEY IS NOT AN ISSUE as I am out of state for UVA. I was wondering which school was better based on:

academics
beauty of the campus
prestige (which is more "impressive")
where one would have more fun

I realize that these two schools are completely different and it is more about "fit" as uva is public and emory is private, but I really have absolutely no idea which one I should choose. I figured that this thread would be more geared towards Emory so please explain why Emory is a better choice. Thanks!

First, congrats on your acceptances to both Emory and UVA, two very impressive colleges. I’ll try to be as unbiased as possible in this post, but I go to school here at Emory. That said, I live in Charlottesville and will comment on UVA’s many positive attributes as well.

In terms of academics, they are very much on the same level. Both have rigorous academic standards and are highly selective. I don’t think you could decide on one rather than the other on the basis of academic standard.

Beauty of the campus: It is very much a personal preference; While UVA has picturesque traditional Jeffersonian architecture, Emory has a more “californian” look to it, with lots of swish modern buildings and marble.

Prestige: UVA is one of the best public colleges, Emory is called ‘one of the new ivies’. I would say that Emory is ever so slightly more impressive, though, for three reasons. Firstly, Emory is ranked 20th, UVA 25th. Emory also has slightly better test scores and a slightly lower acceptance rate. And, less can say they attended Emory than UVA, as Emory has roughly 7,000 students while UVA has more than 15,000. That leads me on to size, where I think Emory has the upper hand as I think a school with 5,000-7,000 student is perfect.

More fun: Emory is in Atlanta, a bustling city where there is much more to do than Charlottesville. If you’re going out on a Friday night, being in Atlanta is certainly going to be more fun than Charlottesville.

I hope this helps your decision and if you have further questions let me know

thanks for the input! I just want to be a devil’s advocate here just to see if emory really is the right choice:

While Emory is 20th and UVA is 25th, UVA’s business school is 5th and Emory’s is 12th (USNWR) and I am planning on going to the business school for junior year.

I’m not sure Emory’s acceptance rate is lower than UVA’s because this past year, im not sure about Emory, but UVA had a 26% acceptance rate. Also, I think in terms of myself, UVA always had a lower acceptance rate than Emory because the OOS acceptance rate is 22% ([Notes from Peabody: The UVA Application Process: Unofficial Admission Statistics for the Class of 2016](Notes from Peabody: The UVA Application Process: Unofficial Admission Statistics for the Class of 2016)). Additionally, the SAT scores for out of state are much higher than their overall average so they are probably either the same or bigger than Emory’s.

I’m not saying this because i like UVA better, I just want to be devil’s advocate

I think because Emory’s stats are so similiar to UVA’s, and stats/rankings are always changing, location plays an important role in choosing which university to attend. Do you want to live in a small historic city, or Atlanta? While Charlottesville may be more collegiate in atmosphere, there is so much to do in Atlanta and so many opportunities for internships etc. And regarding the business school, I know the program at Goizueta is outstanding. Wherever you decide to enroll, best of luck

Full disclosure, I go to Emory, so I’m obviously a bit biased in my response, but I just wanted to reply to some of the things posted by goblue26:

I think you’re looking at grad school ratings for UVA/Emory’s business schools. For undergraduate business rankings, Emory’s Goizueta Business School ranked 3rd this year while UVA’s undergraduate business school was ranked 2nd. Honestly, the difference between 2nd and 3rd is miniscule.

I see what you’re saying, but I think you also have to take into consideration that Emory’s acceptance rate of students from georgia is probably higher than from those out of state, which raises its acceptance rate. Again, I think comparing the acceptance rates when they’re so close together is fairly pointless.

I think you should choose what school you’re going to attend based on which place you want to spend 4 years in. Emory is smaller, private, and in Atlanta. UVA is a bit bigger, public, and in Charlottesville. Good luck with your decision!
