Emory Waitlist Class of 2020

Hey guys, I wouldn’t hold your breath. I called admissions today for Oxford and was told that it is unlikely that they will be utilizing the waitlist this year; however, the process has just begun so I guess all we can do is hope that things will work out.

@NotAMathlete ,is including Emory CAS?thanks.

@Hoped123 I’m not sure. Emory may be different; however, either way, it appears that the schools are expecting around 28% yield similar to last year’s yield of approximately 28%. If you factor in the fact that Emory’s applicant pool decreased by about 1,000 applications, but also consider that they have reported that their applicant pool this year was more competitive than ever, it can be concluded that the waitlist could be larger than last year’s (~5,500 placed, ~2,900 accepting a spot on the waitlist) and probably has around 3,200 applicants; however, as a result of the diminished applicant pool 28% percent of students enrolling does not represent the same actual number of students enrolling, thus, the number of applicants accepted may be slightly larger (~150 rather than 133 from last year).

My best advice for you is that you submit updated grades, new awards, and a letter of continued interest ASAP. If you really like Emory assert that it is your top choice, and - if you are in a position to do so - indicate that you are willling to attend sans financial aid. Many students may not be aware that the submission of a letter of continued interest is even an option, and many more may not even bother to follow up. Thus, it is in your (our) best interests to continue finding ways to demonstrate our interest in the school.

If anyone has heard anything it would be incredibly helpful if they could post here about it. I’ve had a terrible time with admissions this year, and am really praying that Emory/Oxford will pull through. Best of luck to everyone! Feel free to message me! :^))

@NotAMathlete ,Thank you for all the information,Wish we can have good news soon.

@NotAMathlete : I don’t think the shift in applications will have that much of an influence. Emory never pulled much off the waitlist in previous years where the volume was maybe 2k or more lower. Also, they admitted only marginally better students, so if there is a flop in the yield it has nothing to do with the competition. Emory isn’t one of those that decides it will risk its yield by trying to add 10-20 points to the SAT IQR each year. The increase was very modest and will likely make no difference in the student that yields. Typically the schools that deal with that issue are the ones that intentionally admit basically the highest scoring applicants knowing that their admits will overlap with peers that have better yield. These schools tend to pull from the waitlist much more heavily because they essentially undershot with their acceptance rate in an attempt to appear more selective than the previous year. Emory actually admitted more folks with a slightly smaller pool (how it kept up anywhere near last year’s numbers, I don’t know…but somehow it pulled it off. I guess 19-20k is a new norm) so I think that was their way of compensating for making offers to those who they may fail to keep up with while perhaps getting close to their 28% yield.

Hi everyone,
I got off the waitlist yesterday. I’ve never made a post but wanted to tell you all what the admissions counselor told me to hopefully assuage some of the anxiety and anticipation. She called first of all and informed me that there is only a small number of students coming off the waitlist this year (not a specific number) That’s about all the useful information I got. Good luck everyone!!!

@Cindythestudent Which school did you get into?

@bernie12 Haha, thanks for your input! I was just speculating and should have disclosed that I am definitely not an authoritative source of information. :^))

@Cindythestudent ,Congratulations!!! Can I ask if you got off Emory’s waitlist or Oxford college’s?If you don’t mind.Thanks.

Emory CAS! Not Oxford because I never checked off Oxford

Cindy did you get into Emory or Oxford???

@timeforAP I think Cindy specified that they got into Emory CAS in the post above. Has anyone heard back from Oxford yet?

called today and told Unfortunately all the international student spaces are filled.so I am done with the waitlist.
Wish you all have good news soon.Good luck to everyone and thanks for lot of advice.
