I've heard parking is difficult for students at Emory, and I'm not even sure if freshmen are allowed cars. How easy is it to get around without one? Is there a metro or bus system nearby, restaurants within walking distance, etc?

My daughter will be a student there this fall and we're hoping to visit for the first time next month. Any recommendations for fun things for students to do nearby would be welcome!

Emory provides weekend shuttles to Lenox Mall (huge mall), Centennial Park and Atlantic Station (s smaller shopping center.) There’s a MARTA bus nearby which goes to the airport (maybe downtown?) My D sometimes goes with friends who own cars to Publix supermarket (a bit far to walk) and Atlanta Symphony concerts. Dr. Prior (orchestra director) is a composer and Atlanta Symphony has premiered some of his works. Some ASO players teach at Emory (including my D’s teacher), so they give them nice seats at a student rate.

On one side of campus near the rotary (Emory Village) there’s a ton of fast food places for students. At Emory Point down the road (a bit further out), there’s a CVS and more upscale shops and restaurants which seem to be turning over to more affordable options. Sweet Monkey (cupcakes/froyo) and Marlow’s Tavern are good.

On campus, if you have a chance to walk in Lullwater Park, it’s pretty; Carlos museum is popular too. There are many concerts at Schwartz Center, where Emory’s orchestra plays. The Schwartz is a frequent stop for international musicians on tour and Emory students can attend for $10.

It’s not on campus, but I’d like to see the Atlanta Aquarium next time I’m in town. My friend’s husband is a diver in the gigantic tank and it’s supposed to be jaw dropping.

Great description of Emory…and I’ll toss in one other restaurant idea…the General Muir is within walking distance of the Emory campus…and in case you’re wondering “what’s the General Muir” it’s a deli beyond compare…which just won

Hi, yes parking is often tight because of the number of cars on Atlanta roads and the permit is always expensive (it is Emory, after all). It is however really quite easy to live without a car, because not only does Emory have an extensive bus system which can take you on weekends from campus to Lenox Mall and Toco Hills shopping center (Kroger etc.) but also there’s Emory Village which is a collection of restaurants just near the entrance gate and is very much in walking distance to all but the laziest.

In terms of fun things to do, this often happens in students’ rooms, and a car is seldom needed. It goes without saying though for second year and above students a car affords the flexibility to go when you want to places where you want. In one’s first year it never hurts to make friends with people with cars. Best of luck to your D & if you visit, enjoy!
