Employee of the Month vs. Legacy

Hypothetical question

2 people, equally qualified, are trying to get into the same elite school

Candidate A has a parent who went to the school
Candidate B has a parent who now works for the school

Which candidate has the better odds of getting in, and by how much?

Thanks :)

anyone..........................?

Depends on specifics.

For example, if the parent works as the dean of admissions, that's a pretty big bonus.

Candidate B...
My mom went to Hillsdale College in Michigan which is kinda hard to get into, defnintely you have to be like in the top 10% of your HS class. Anyway she had like a 2.5 gpa and she got in, only because her dad, my grandpa, worked as a janitor there!

well i am asking because i have 2 friends who are the two candidates. they are both about equall in terms of geniousness. they want to go to different elite schools (H and P) but probably equally difficult to get in.

one kid has a mom who went to P
my other friend has a Mom who works at the financial aid office in H...she has been working there for about 5 months

how much will either one of these help them, and who more do you say? thanks again

I don't think 5 months will make the cut, though it will carry some weight. If the kid has strong numbers, then he'll help himself out.

Wait, this is sort of like a chances type thing, right. I thought you were against those. jk jk, but hmmm I would give it to the students who's relative is currently working at the school as opposed to a relative who's an alumni, though it would be pretty close I would think.

dvlfnfv5 ... i wonder if they check how long they have been working there

tony- you are right i am against those. lol... this post is like the smokers patch...slowly getting me off the chances forum

LOL, got ya, it's all good, yea I'm sort of against them, only for those who are blatantly innacurate or give very, very vague responses, but other than that as long as kids see what they're up against then it's worth it, though I know from personal experiences that they're not very good at guessing, at least for me, but oh well, I totally know where you're coming from at least, so good luck with your venture.

thanks Tonyt.

yea... i don't think they are very good at guessing for me as well. there is a lot of stuff that you can put in the essays that don't fit in the GPA/ SAT section.

From what i've gathered in this section, the essay is as important, if not more important than your sats/transcript/ecs etc....grades tell what you've done based on what you have, but the essay tells who you are...at more selective colleges like hypsm i'd expect the essay to be incredibly important because it's like the closest to an interview the adcoms will have with you.

Just my opinion though...

anyone else know about employee vs. legacy?

bump..................

I don't know if either help really, my dad worked for U of Michigan and both of my parents were graduates. Neither helped me in admissions.
