Employment for international students

Hi

I am a Caribbean student. I have been accepted to Wake Forest University'S LLM program this fall and I am interested in finding a part time job to assist with living expenses. I welcome your suggestions

What’s your legal immigration status in the US?

I will be in the US on a F-1 visa.

Are you familiar with student visa work restrictions?

F-1 students cannot accept an off-campus job in their first year of study, except when required by their academic program. Your visa allows you to work for the university, but your program might prohibit that. I found this in the Wake Forest Law School Handbook:

[quote]
The law school and accrediting agencies require that a student be in a position to devote most of his or her working hours to the study of law. Therefore, entering students are strongly urged not to accept any kind of employment during their first academic year, and upper class students are advised not to exceed twenty hours per week of employment. Because of the intense curriculum, work-study funds are not made available to first year students.
The law school has a variety of student employment opportunities. Students interested in student employment must contact the financial aid office for eligibility criteria./quote

Thanks for your reply. I spoke with someone from the school who told me I can work off campus 9for 20 hours only). I will be leaving Guyana early August so i was looking for vacancies online but was not successful . Hence the reason I posted the question. I wanted information on any organization/company in Wake Forest that hires international students part time. If you know of any I would be grateful for the information.

I am a bit concerned that the person you talked to gave you advice on law school/university policy rather than visa policies. Did they say what work permit you would use to pursue employment in your first year? Please take care not to accept undocumented employment. That could get you deported and leave you ineligible for a visa to the States in the future.

I am only aware of three work permits for F-1 students, and none seems to apply to your situation:

Optional Practical Training: not available in the first year of study.

Curricular Practical Training: only available if the work is part of your academic program (e.g. teaching or nursing internships). since your law school handbook strongly discourages employment in the first year, i assume that it’s not part of your academic program.

Hardship Employment: only available if you can document an unforeseen change in your financial circumstances since you have started your studies. not applicable since you haven’t started your program yet.

If there are other work permits for F-1 students, I would be interested to hear about them!
