I wonder how active is career office in Kenyon. I am planning to major in sciencies (biochemistry), and I don't consider medical school at this point. Will Kenyon's rural location affect my chances of getting a good job after college? I am split between Macalester and Kenyon. Even though I have a warm fuzzy feeling toward Kenyon, will Macalester's location help me to get a better job after I graduate?

You will be able to get a job after graduating from either school. If you want a job in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area I would go to Macalaster, otherwise it won’t make a difference. I think it is funny you only mention medical school…many biochem students go on to Dental, Vet, Optom and PhD programs etc as well. I work for a biotech in the Minneapolis area so I have a fairly good idea of how hiring works around here.

If you do well in school and have research experience(as much as you can get) then you will be able to get a job you enjoy. It is important to figure out what general field you want to go into and then work in a lab that does something similar. For instance, don’t work only on wetland ecosystems if you want a job researching metabolism. Beyond the Kenyon summer science programs you should also try to do a summer undergrad research program at another school or institution.

As for the career center, they are good at finding career internships for you (especially 1 week long externs) and helping with your resume. I think for finding a job it will be more on you to go out and do the grunt work…having a summer biotech internship wouldn’t hurt if you can find one.

Kenyon’s alumni network is INCREDIBLE, long before you graduate and even more so afterwards. Alumni connections helped me get an interview for my current job as well as being offered several incredible opportunities. However, alumni help current students long before graduation with summer internships and jobs.

The summer after my first year at Kenyon I had two very prestigious internships in DC which I got through a Kenyon connection and I also was given an apartment 8 blocks from the Capitol building for the summer for FREE by a Kenyon alumn.

Ultimately, it’s up to the individual to make themselves a terrific applicant for any job or opportunity. However, not only does Kenyon give you all the tools and skills intellectually and academically, but they also hand real life experience to you on a platter. It’s just up to you to take advantage of it.
