Employment

I want to get a job this fall (I'm an entering freshman). Is it better to work for the University (e.g. in the library or dining hall), one of the student agencies, or for a store or restaurant in the town? I'm looking to make about $100 a week. Any suggestions from current students?

Library jobs are good as they typically have flexible hours. You should also check out the Frist Campus Center. You can do homework at a lot of their jobs and its open from 7AM to 2 or 3AM most nights.

I don't know anyone who works in town, and I imagine the pay is less. Library jobs are good, and PUDS is easy, but you can't do homework. You might look into tutoring a few high school students. Pay is more than double what you would get at a normal job.

how would you go about tutoring high school kids? do they come from neighboring schools on the campus?

(and are you allowed to get a job if you qualified for workstudy, but have a scholarship fulfilling your requirement? )

thanks again :)

Anyone can get a job. It doesn't matter if you're work study or paying full freight. Most jobs, including tutoring positions, are posted on the Student Employment website. There aren't many jobs posted now, but there will be come September.

Wow, thank you so much! I didn't know such a website existed. So cool!

Make sure you are aware of your work-study status: are you just normal work-study or are your FEDERAL work-study (FWS)? You can get some of the best jobs with federal work-study status - there should be a posting on the student employment website for a co-manager position at Murray-Dodge cafe...this is by far the most lucrative and enviable job on campus!!! You basically bake cookies every night with awesome people and get paid the highest wage rate for FWS jobs. I worked there last year, but I lost my FWS status so I can't continue. Good luck with the search!
