Employment

how much of a boost does being employed during the school year and is it worth killing yourself to work like 3 or 4 days a week. My EC’s are not steller and they arent terrible so i dont know if its worth keepin the job for the school year becuase i dont feel that it would make my EC’s stand out even more I was just wondering if it plays more a factor that i am working during the school year rather than the summer. Also this would mean that i wouldnt be able to play a fall sport which i would have likely otherwise…Please help me decide on what i should do…As it stands right now i am scheduled to work 4 days 20hrs per week during the school year…Is that a lot of hrs to work per week during school what have some of you worked during the year and found manageable and if its only like 1 or 2 days a week is it worth it i dont really need the money( that doesnt mean im rich becuase im not i just dont really spend money on anything so really i have to great need to make money) i am basically working for college acceptance

bump......
..

please any advice

dude i think 4 days/20 hrs per week is A LOT...
can't you try to shorten your working hours to like 10 hrs...
i say, work less and go for that fall sport

yea so u think that it would still be worth it to work only like 2 days a week for 10hrs......in my personal opinion i feel that 10hrs a week isnt a lot at all but i dont want to overwork myself if i work more can some1 who has held a job during school tell me what they felt was a manageable amount of hours

During junior year I worked 4 days a week (25 hours). It took a lot of energy, but I don't regret doing it.

yea i would have to work 2 days during the week and both saterday and sunday so i guess only the 2 weekdays would only be affecting my school work but how much does having a job during school bolster an application does something like this really stand out or is it just like another piece of wood in the fire..Thats also something that i would like to kno....Is it really worth breaking my back

bump.......

dude... calm down. Don't take up a job just for college applications. It's not that serious. Focus on EC's you could do in school. Work experience strictly during the summer is perefectly FINE.

For example, here's me:

-FRESHMAN SUMMER
Camp Counselor at local Summer Camp
45 hrs/wk, 8 wks

-SOPHOMORE SUMMER
Same job as above

-JANUARY 2005
One month internship at local newspaper. Wrote several articles that I will use for college apps.

-JUNIOR SUMMER
Same summer job as before, with a pay raise.

Now I plan on getting another internship, and working for my school's aftercare program.

You see how I WORKED MY WAY up to this? I didn't just jump into it and get in over my head, which is what you're about to do by work 20 hours a week. Focus on getting solid academic credentials. The EC's come later, and matter less than grades and standardized tests. Remember that.

so whats a good amount of hours to work and still make in appealing to adcoms

Are you working because you want to, or because you think it'll give you a boost for college applications?

both mainly the latter and also my parents want me to get one(only way they will chip in buying me a car)

work on your grades. other EC's other than jobs will do basically the same for college apps. Jobs aren't necessary to go to a top school. They just help, but so do having great EC's.

thats the only thing im not in line to be president or officer of any clubs so i figure that this is the only way i can try and make up for that

"thats the only thing im not in line to be president or officer of any clubs so i figure that this is the only way i can try and make up for that"

make your own then. I just don't think that a job would be the right move for u.
