I am hoping someone from Alabama will answer this question. I can’t find any published timelines.

Okay, first take a look at the UAB application. There’s no way it could take you until the end of September to complete it. In fact, I’d have difficulty believing it would take you until the end of this evening to get it done! It’s a fill-in-the-blanks application - no essays, no recommendations. You just need to be able to get your transcript and test scores sent in as soon as you complete the app. (Or you can have them sent first - it works either way.)

Beyond that, the sooner you submit it, the quicker the turnaround will be. It could be as little as a few days, or it might be as long as a couple of weeks. Do it now and there’s no way you’ll still be waiting for an answer on Dec. 15!

EMSAP is an amazing program . . . expensive (the med school portion, anyway) if you’re not an Alabama resident, but you’ll save buckets of money while you’re an undergrad, so it probably evens out in the end. And the UAB students I know absolutely LOVE it there!

lol, dodgersmom… very true … the initial application takes about 5 minutes… no essay. emsap will require essay and interview. it is very very selective… i think the website used to say you can be considered with an act of 30, but realistically you need about a 34.

if you are considering emsap, your stats must be quite good, so you will qualify for automatic merit aid. if an nmf you would get a full ride for the undergrad portion.

if you have any other questions, my S2 is a senior there

Thanks for the answers! Oh, I didn’t realize the application was very quick…I’ll get working on it then. I think I have a good shot at NMF. I was reading the website and I realized that a lot of colleges say that if you want scholarship money from them for being a NMF, you have to list them as your top choice. What does this mean? Also, don’t you get NMF results back very late so you wouldn’t know whether or not you are an NMF while you are applying to college?

And @dodgersmom, I couldn’t find the cost of the med school on their website. Do you happen to know about how much it would cost per year?

And I just happen to have that in front of me:

https://services.aamc.org/tsfreports/report.cfm?select_control=PUB&year_of_study=2013

Keep in mind, though, that’s tuition & fees only (plus health insurance) - housing, food, books, etc. are not included. It’s not bad if you’re an Alabama resident, but if you’re not . . .

For NMF, yes, it’s true that you can only list one school that you want the award to go to, but there’s no rush. You’ll have time to add or change that designation once you know you’ve won (and know what schools you’ve been admitted to). Otherwise, it would be silly . . . you’d select College X in September, only to find out in April that you didn’t get in! So, no worries about that - you’ll have plenty of time.

Oh wow thanks for the chart! That’s really useful.

combined programs are wonderful if you are absolutely sure you want to be a doctor… many people begin college with that idea and change their mind though. also most people who go to med school dont go through a combined program…so not getting into one isnt the end of the path… if i recall correctly at uab, they usually have about 8 emsap students but about 200-250 uab students will be “pre-med”. so while you will apply to emsap type programs, also have a more traditional path worked out too. ie a school you like, that you can do well gpa-wise, one that offers research, volunteering and shadowing, and keep your costs as low as you can, you will have enough debt with med school! … if nmf try to find the schools that offer full rides.

Yeah, @parent56 thanks for the advice! I’m pretty sure I want to go to med school, but I’m definitely not just limiting myself to combined programs.

Also, does anybody happen to know where the EMSAP actual application is? I was going to look at the application/requirements before I filled out the UAB app. I found the EMSAP website and I think its supposed to be with the Honors College app but I can’t find that either?

Also, I was looking at the Honors College program that UAB had and I was kinda curious if anybody happened to have experience with the Honors College and could tell me a little more about how they liked it, etc. And if its possible to do both Honors College and EMSAP or are they completely separate?

Bobbyjoe - are you from Alabama? I understand it would be quite hard to make the cut if you are not in-state since most seats are given to instate students and there are so few of them.

bobbyjoe, once you get a few more posts feel free to pm me

texaspg… actually for emsap there is no preference…in state or oos.
12. Is there a preference for in-state students?
EMSAP does not have any quotas for in-state students. Generally, the class is balanced between in and out-of-state students, but decisions that determine if students are admitted are based on the student, not necessarily his or her resident status.

applying for med school is different, about 80% of uab med school students are instate

parent56 - That is the official stated policy that there is no preference. However, if you read this year’s results threads on CC, it shows most OOS students did not seem to make the cut. It would be good to see if there are any numbers from the school of the split.

The OOS tuition at public med schools is often comparable to the tuition at private med schools.

Yes, it usually is a bargain if you can attend your instate public, but if you live in a state (like Calif) where about half of med students have to go OOS, then you may not have a choice but pay a high price.

once accepted to uab and given blazer ID number you should be able to apply through this link

thanks for the link, parent56!

^^^you’re welcome!

Looked at the available stats and they are stacked so in favor or AL residents to be comparable to the med school stats…like 80% IS.
