Encourage those Scholarship applications

I just wanted to encourage everyone to nag their students to fill out as many local scholarship applications as possible. My DS was a good sport about it most of the time. I had to nag him to get finished with the last 2 or 3 but it really paid off. One of the last ones he filled out was a local three county scholarship worth $20,000.

We found out yesterday that he was a awarded a $5,000 scholarship that is renewable for four years and also a $1,000 scholarship that is non-renewable. He was also named a finalist for a scholarship that is worth up to $6,000/year. He will probably not receive that one because it is a scholarship of last resort. You have to have some unmet need left.

Emphasize the ACT or SAT score for those merit scholarships. My son is going to UA and was awarded their Presidential Scholarship which pays for all of tuition based on his ACT score. It is looking more and more like he will end up with a full ride.

He can now focus on school instead of having to worry about working at the same time. I am all for working but at least now he has a choice.

I wish everyone's students the best. I am one proud mom!

That is awesome! Congrats to you all!

SRobin, my son, like yours, is going to UA on the Presidential scholarship, but also got the National Merit one. He filled out numerous forms and wrote additional essays for scholarships which has resulted (so far) in an additional $6,000. When I told my mom that he filled out additional scholarship forms, she asked, “Doesn’t he have enough money now?”

There is never enough, I told her. There are costs we all probably forgot.

Just ask some of my students, many of his friends, who are scrambling for scholarship money. I have told them that once they get to college, they will have a chance to compete for additional monies.

So you are right. Take the ACT/SAT seriously. Also, look for schools that will reward you for big scores/GPA. Not every school does. That is the message my son tries to convey to juniors and sophomores. Many just laugh, because they can get loans, they say. But with loans, you must repay them.
