End The AA Debate

Look, we have seen this argument over and over again towards the end of every school year when acceptances or rejections have been mailed, recieved, and thought over.

What continues to make me laugh is that the people who rant and rant about AA, use one example to justify their conclusions. Okkaaay thats great that you lost your position to some rich native american girl, its fiiinnne that someone lost their spot to some rich black kid, but dont you think these cases are limited. I mean jesus christ, why cant some people just accept that the world isnt fair for NOW. The colleges and universities are trying to promote diversity, and if some people dont care- well they can have fun at their local community college or try their part in some supremacy group. Its hillarious really.

I mean how would someone feel if someone came on the board and started saying MAN I AM MAD ABOUT DISCRIMINATION, OR MAN WHY DID MY MOM AND DAD HAVE TO BE SEGREGATED FROM OTHERS IN THE AREA, OR MAN WHY DID MY GRAND PARENTS HAVE TO BE SLAVES, MAN I REALLY HATE JIM CROW, MAN WHY DID MY MOM AND DAD HAVE TO BE MEXICAN.

I mean seriously of all the unfair things in the world, of all the damn discrimination and hate, some lonely white kid in suburbia is crying that even though he will go to college, he “lost a space to some URM” at another college. HOW IN THE HELL DO YOU KNOW YOU LOST THAT SPACE TO A URM, DID THE REJECTION LETTER SAY “DEAR … YOU HAVE BEEN REJECTED IN FAVOR OF A MIDDLE CLASS NATIVE AMERICAN GIRL”.

And why the hell dont we need Diversity? That is great hate speech. You should join your local chapter of the neo nazi party. But please dont admonish an ideal that improves communication, creates more well rounded individuals competent and ready for interaction in a world that is becoming more diverse and more global, that is promoting understanding, unity, and compassion amongst and within groups of different ethnicities and races to create a STRONGER AND MORE UNITED AMERICA.

You see, i show no hate to any group of people. If I got rejected from some big name school and a friend who was a poor white person got in, i wouldnt fuss about it. Even if he wasnt poor, i wouldnt fuss about it. Because at the end of the day you dont know what that person wrote on his essays, his ec’s, or what else made him desirable. Plus everyone (At least on CC or competent enough to debate over AA) will attend some college. Make the best of YOUR college experience, and dont bicker over some thing that really will consume your life and turn you into a supremacist. Just rejoice in knowing that you will attend college, and use the energy from debating over AA into making better grades so that when you apply for grad school YOU WILL BE A LOCk and wont “lose out to some URM”.

I just ask people who say they know of some rich black or spanish kid get into a good school, to know that for every one or two of them their are thousands of people in the slums who dont get in.

Does anyone claiming AA is unfair have anything to say? Was SLAVERY unfair? Was DISCRIMINATION unfair? Was Jim Crow unfair? Was all those damn cases of police brutality unfair? How about thousands dying to cross the border every day in SoCal? Is it fair that all the people who sell flowers on the street in the midest of traffic are spanish? Is it fair that the Native Americans lost their beutiful homeland to some colonizers, and are forced to live in “reservations”? Is it fair that native american communities have alcoholism rates through the roof, or that inner city blacks are dying in the midst of a war in the ghettos? Is it fair that blacks and hispanics make up about 27% of the population, but make up 78% of prison population, or 56% of the poor population?

Has any one seen Washington, D.C. or LA. 4 miles from the WHITE HOUSE (THE CAPITAL OF THE FREE WORLD) is 2 housing projects. 100% black, 75% of the people have been living their for more than 20 years (or their parents have), 55% were born their as their parents were. 6 miles south of the CAPITAL BUILDING is a section of Southeast DC known as Anacostia, where their are more than a dozen housing projects with over 300,000 people. Murders, poverty, drug addiction.
Same thing in LA. 25 miles from Rodeo Drive, and Hollywood is East LA, where 96% of the population is spanish and 3% black. Gangs with an army of more than 5,000 roam the streets. Even though LA murder rate is small compared to its population, most of the murders happen in these areas which have relatively smaller populations. 35 miles south west is Compton, 60% black, 40% spanish (PERIOD NO EXPLANATION NEEDED). Why are 9% of black people reporting that they were denied jobs due to blantant discrimination. Why are day laborer pick up sites popping up every where, but spanish construction workers make on average 8.75 dollars an hour compared to 14.09 dollars an hour to their white counterparts who are working the SAME DAMN JOB.

Come the **** on, why does some middle class kid who lost out to a rich native american girl cry out unfair when MILLIONS of people live the life of “UNFAIR”, the damn quintessence of unfairness. I mean seriously how many of you who claim that AA is unfair, are really poor. Poor whites in West virgina, dont even hear of Harvard or Yale, let alone go to college.

SO AT THE END OF THE DAY, AA IS JUST ONE WAY OF TRYING TO FIX THE AMERICAN INEQUALITY, ONE WAY OF CREATING DIVERSITY, HELPING A GROUP OF THE POPULACE WHO WAS AND IS TRADITIONALLY UNDER REPRESENTED AND DISCRIMINATED AGAINST. No one is claiming that it is perfect, or doesnt have any flaws. And yes maybe some colleges are using this to improve their diversity ratings. But really it has done great things to improve the lives of minorities who often feel the brunt of hate. So i ask everyone to please let this debate rest in peace and understand that right now and for the next 10 to 20 years AA will be here in some form to help people, not hurt them. If you believe you “lost your spot”, you dont know that. And even if you did know, doesnt that native american girl whose ancestors lost their land deserve a shot. I mean seriously, doesnt that rich black kid deserve a little boost when his grand parents were forced to come here as SLAVES. Doesnt that mexican kid deserve a boost, when america took his ancestors land, or when unfair economics force his parents to immigrate and work too hard.

At the end of the day, if you are debasing AA, then you dont know how life is at the bottom. Dont use some example of a rich kid who may seem undeserving make it, over some middle class white kid or asian kid. Just remeber life is unfair for everyone and has been for a long time. AA is unfair to a few people, because no one knows how many are “Turned over” in favor of an URM, but certainly they are smaller than the 7.5 million slaves imported to america, or the 10 million illegal immigrants roaming the deserts and saying “Credit or Cash” 16 hours a day, or the 2.5 million Native Americans, WHO LOST AMERICA!!!

Just remeber YOU ARE NOT POOR, so dont try to sympathasize with the white poor.Remeber the white poor share the same ordeal as most blacks and hispanics. Remeber that there are only 500 or so blacks at harvard and 500 or so hispanics, and that maybe 50 or 60 % were helped by AA. But there are 60 or so million blacks and hispanics in America, so the occurance of AA is really quite small. Plus remeber that a reported 10% of Harvard students are admitted as legacies. Why dont people post things about “I hate leagacies, or legacy status is unfair”. Remeber that until 1970, Yale was a damn near RICH WHITE CLUB ONLY. Remeber that until 1956, blacks and whites went to different schools, and Jim Crow was everywhere, not to mention THE GOVERNMENT SANCTIONED programs that created the Inner city life of today by promoting restrictive covenants that made black home owners in suburbia rare.

Plus, even if Harvard accepted all of its 20 percent or so blacks and hispanics, doesnt that mean that 80 percent or so are white or asian.

Just accept AA, forget ranting, unite, help the poor and disadvanteged, and ENJOY YOUR COLLEGE…

well the reason why so many people get upset about AA is that these colleges have mission statements, and they all discuss the pursuit of academic excellence. In a process that is supposed to be honoring the academic achievments of a student, the color of his skin should not be a factor.

The social injustices of the past which you discuss are indeed unfair, but do not really apply as an analgous situation. Many people cite the Decleration of Independence's "All men are created equal" as the reason why social injustices should not occur. However that argument is based on a false statement. Not all men (or women) are created equal. I'm not as good as Shaq at playing basketball, I can't act like Tom Cruise, I'm not as creative as J.K. Rowling, etc.

Also, given that colleges are looking for the best class they can assemble from the applicants, and not that anyone over x sat score and y gpa gets in, for every student admitted, that's one less spot for you. So to say that "maybe your application wasnt good enough" is not necessarily true. What you could remind them though is that plenty of non URMs did get in, and so it's not necessarily the half-hispanic legacy recruit (yes, in fact I know one of these) who took your spot.

I feel that AA is one of those things that can never be solved because no one can look at it objectively. Most minorities are blinded by its benefiets while most whites can't see past the fact that it doesnt give them a boost.

I wish that they would base AA on socioeconomic or personal reasons instead of just the color of a person's skin. This is probably not practical since it is harder to verify that a white person grew up in poverty with alcoholic parents than just to look at a rich black kid and say that we need you because you are black. If something isn't fair, people should point it out. Otherwise, Martin Luther King was just a whining troublemaker. Life may not be fair, but people should point out where it isn't fair and try to change it.
