It is still early and all thefigures have not come out yet, but it would seem that Michigan’s endowment has, once again, outgained that of most other top 20 universities. 20 years ago, Michigan’s endowment was not even ranked among the top 25. Today, it sits firmly among the top 10. Last year, Michigan’s endowment was 7th, right behind Columbia. Columbia’s 2008 figures have not been released yet, but if it follows in the footsteps of its Ivy bretheren, its endowment should expand by less than 10%, making Michigan the 6th wealthiest university in the land. 20 years ago, Michigan’s endowment per student was roughly 1/10 that of its private peers. Today, it is roughly 1/2 to 2/3 of that of its private peers. Of course, given economies of scale and state funding, the financials of public institutions work differently from those of private institutions.
