They tend to focus more on stuff like GPA/class rank, course rigor and test scores. However, secondary factors can weigh in as well. Only 10% of admits are selected for Honors and it’s by college. Here is the review and selection process (scroll down a bit to get ACT/SAT and class rank information).

Is it true that Engineering acceptance is slow? I do not see much flow here and our portal did not show any update for the past seven weeks, so still waiting.
RD deadline fast approaching and first choice college acceptances all coming out by end of this week (hopefully). Activity should pick up in (early?) January.
When do regular decision applicants for engineering usually hear back?
Not sure about CSE but some RD applicants heard back earlier this month or even in Nov.

UMN doesn’t admit to a major. You are admitted to CSE and apply to a major in your sophomore year.

Very happy with their quick turnaround! But it will all come down to the aid I get.
We have not heard our decision yet on engineering. Their deadline is 31st so no idea what they are doing? The status has not changed at all from the beginning. Any idea guys why its so slow?
@AAA124555 you may have been deferred, but it doesn’t make sense for them to announce deferral until right around the EA deadline.
Last year, you could actually figure out if you were deferred by the Tracker message changing to something like “your application is being carefully considered.” The Communication Center wouldn’t include any corresponding admission message. Have no idea if the same will happen this year.
@w00pw00p & @JBStillFlying its very puzzling when I called the admissions office they say that its still waiting for a counselor’s review and should get a decision by 31st. It seems like its similar to MSU which was the same. My son did get in (mechanical) but it took some time. So I am currently baffled how their system works.
@JBStillFlying this year my son’s portal did not change a single time so no idea whats going on. Also if its rolling decision it does not make sense to hold till the deadline 31st to inform. Only logical sense I can make as its rolling they might be really slow and not yet on the application, but not sure just a speculation. Just frustrating!!!
@AAA124555 -They seem a tad slower this year than some other years. Next weekend is MLK and the students all return after that. It’d be a good time for them to push out a lot of decisions.
