Engineering Acceptance Stats?

Does anyone have stats on the new Freshman engineering class? While overall university stats (standardized test, GPA, etc) are fairly readily available, I am struggling to find stats on Engineering. We are out of state and DD has been wowed by and is very interested in VT along with a couple of other comparable, top engineering schools. She is certainly in the top 25% for university stats and has extremely high math subscores along with a rigorous high school resume (including through Multi variable Calc). I am just fearful that the growing popularity of engineering and these schools in particular will drive the admission stats off the charts.

ASEE shows the 75% SAT is 1450 for engineering majors (750 math, 700 english), but they don’t list an average GPA. It also notes 92% of the applicants are in the top 25% of their class. 53% acceptance rate for engineering.

Virginia Tech is incredibly transparent with their admissions data, more than most. These two links really let you drill down on specific data. Use them to search for admissions data on any of VT’s colleges. The latest (Class of 2023) data is not in there yet, however.

According the the engineering department data from the links STEM2017 shows above - for the 2018 engineering class the average gpa was 4.11 and SAT 648 Reading / 691 Math (1339) total.

I like to look at the 25th Percentile number as that tells you when you are a little more borderline (Holistic Side needed to push you over the top) - that is 3.9 GPA and SAT 610 Reading / 660 Math (1270 total).

I imagine the 2019 acceptances are fairly close to this. For 2020 engineering, I think it will be more difficut (I’m thinking add an extra 0.1 to GPA numbers above and 30 to the SAT numbers (making 25th percentile upcoming more of 4.0 and 1300).

What are your Daughter’s Stats? If your saying she is in top 25% for the university stats (4.26 and 1390 SAT) then she should be in good shape. And honestly - being out of state I think helps a little.

STEM2107, great info. Thank you very much. She has 4.51, SAT 770 Math/670 Reading, all science/math APs high school offers. Sadly, we are out of state for all of the top engineering schools she desires. Thanks for all of the help!

Yea she is in great shape. Sounds like she wants to apply to multiple schools so unless VT is #1 choice may not want to do Early Decision (binding application due Nov. 1) … but be sure to apply to Early Action (non-binding application due Dec. 1) and be sure an answer all short response essays completely / proofread. Do not apply regular decision as that just fills empty slots.
