Engineering Admissions Chances at Brown

Hello, I was just wondering what my chances are to get into Brown Engineering. I am currently a junior and I’m planning to get into the Computer Engineering program. I am also out-of-state.

ACT: 31, Math:35, Reading:32, English: 30, Science:25

SAT: Not Provided

AP’s done by end of Senior year: World History, Computer Science, Calculus AB, Physics 1, Language and Composition, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Statistics, Physics C Mechanics, Government and Politics, Psychology

UW GPA: 3.80

Rank: I don’t know but for sure top 25 %

EC’s

2 years of FBLA

5 years of YMCA Washington State Youth and Government

3 years of National Honor Society

2 years of Debate

I also have 100 volunteer hours from the local library and 50 hours for a local organization called StreamTeam which helps restore the environment.

I know my chances are low considering that my composite score for the ACT was a 31. However, this was just because it was tanked with my 25 in science. Is this statement justified, because I really don’t want to take the ACT again and there are other things to focus on at this time, and I also got a 35 in math and so maybe I can sell them on that to show that I’m somewhat legit? I’m also deciding whether or not to go to a college fair in a couple weeks with Brown, UChicago, Columbia, Cornell, and Rice. Rice and Brown are the only schools that I’m looking at and so is it worth going even with my stats?

I had similar stats and got waitlisted. No one really knows the outcome but just try to do well thos semester and the first one next year. Maybe take the sat and see how you do.

I think that trying to increase your ACT score would be worth it, especially if you improve science since you’re interested in engineering. your extracurriculars don’t really stand out but if you are passionate about them and convey that I think you’ll be okay. basically, i do think that you are qualified and have a small chance but you never know. good luck!

If you are looking into engineering, really also consider Columbia and Cornell. They’re very reputable and I am sure the resources (and diversity of option) they have for engineering may suit you. As for Brown, you got some shot I guess.

Current Brown engineering undergrad here. I’d take the ACT once more - since there’s only one section pulling your score down, if you focus on that next time you take it, you could really benefit from the superscore.
As far as I know what Brown Engineering (and really Brown in general) looks for on an application is a strong sense of independence. For engineering, they want to see that you’ve made some cool projects or learned about some cool things on your own. In general, personal growth experiences and examples of you overcoming adversity are generally good. If they like your essays, you certainly have a chance - I think that’s what it’ll come down to.
