Do engineering majors who want to go to graduate school (Medical School or Physician Assistant programs) take Chemistry for Engineers or the regular General Chemistry(161/162)?

[SHRP: Master of Science - Physician Assistant Program](http://shrp.umdnj.edu/dept/primary_care/paweb/admissions/prereqs.html)

General Chemistry with lab :)

Well the school of engineering will make you take gen chem for engineers so there is no way out of it I believe. But I think they are pretty much equal.

They will automatically put you in chem 159 for engineers but on their syllabus they will tell you to take chem 161 if you want professional grad school because engineering chem1&2 along with chem lab = 7credits where you need 8 credits of gen chem 1 and 2( 4 credits each for chem 161 and 162, lab is a separate 1 credit course) for most professional schools.

I would call office of academic affairs School of engineering and tell the secretary that you want chem 161 because you are thinking of attending health professional grad school before the class gets full

Do any of you think it’s possible to take the first semester of Chem for engineers and then take the regular 162 Chem? It’ll still add up to 8 credits (including the lab)

Unless you absolutely must take Chemistry for Engineers (I’m not certain of the requirements for an engineering student), you are allowed to take General Chemistry and just bypass Chemistry for Engineers altogether.

http://chem.rutgers.edu/sites/chem.rutgers.edu/files/coursefiles/Courses_f09/159/Chem159Fall09GeneralInformation.pdf

On this page, it says “Chem. 161-162 is the non-engineers version of Chem. 159-160, but is acceptable and suitable for engineers.” Also, “engineering programs will accept Chem. 161-162.”

So I don’t see why not. Just call them up and let them know. I think the time has passed for you to change classes, but be sure to do so at the add/drop period at the beginning of the semester.

Taking Chem 159 in the fall and 162 in the spring is possible.

What happens if I take 161 in the fall but decide to take Chem 2 for engineers in the spring? It’ll still be 8 credits including the lab.

Sorry guys, I’m so paranoid about Chem lol. Like I want to take Chem for engineers b/c it’s slightly easier, however, it’s 1 credit away from grad school requirements. I’ve heard horror stories about the regular Chem and I want to avoid the regular Chem as much as possible.

yea i think its possible to take Chem 159 and 162. I took chem 159/160 along with the lab, called a couple professional schools and they told me 8 credits needed so i am re-taking chem 2 at rutgers newark now to get that 1 credit needed lol

I THINK you can take 162 and take 160, but not sure. You can’t just enter/exit an engineering curriculum from regular as you wish. Check up on that.

Okay, thanks. Man, I wish there was academic advising over the summer. -_-

if you need advising call ahead and ask them questions or ask them what time you can talk to a dean before classes start. [Office of Academic Affairs | Rutgers University School Of Engineering](http://soe.rutgers.edu/oaa/)

To be honest, during the first day of the semester or probably even during the day before classes start you are going to see a line to go into the office and you will probably not going to be seen at all.

Just go in if you are free and also, you can take 159 and then 162. 162 has more credits and meets more in the week. They will tell you that to take 161 and 162 but you can take 159 and 162 if you want to.
