About 160 Seniors last year applied to Illinois from our high school and all but 35 were accepted so that is at least a stat in our favor at least in terms of acceptance. Will be glad when Friday comes as it will be over one way or the other.
@srparent15 I agree with you that a CS +BUS Major would be interesting. Have you heard about the T & M program?
@88jm19 Haven’t heard of that and it does sound interesting. If my son winds up attending UIUC it is something we will have to look at further. Thanks for the info!
@srparent15, you may get credit for CS101 as a CS major instead of having to take CS125 if you take the courses that follow (CS173 and CS225). They recommend that CS majors don’t skip CS125 but I say it depends on your knowledge base coming in (which is why I recommend studying the material in CS225 before taking it).
Higher standing should make it easier to register for classes.
For transferring from DGS, you need A- or better in both CS173 and CS225 and a 3.67 GPA. If he ends up in DGS, I would recommend the easiest classes that they will allow (so CS225 and CS173). The level of difficulty doesn’t seem to be taken in to consideration for transfers, just the grades, so 2 A-'s in those 2 classes beats an A- and B+ in 2 higher-level classes. A- or better doesn’t seem easy to come by in UIUC CS (though maybe it’s easier in CS125 and CS173). Maybe 20-25% get them? Which is why, according to that reddit thread, only 50 or so manage to successfully transfer in each year.
Edit: Oh, I see, so you’re saying he will come in with credit for CS225? Then 2 A-'s in 2 other CS classes would be required: https://wiki.cites.illinois.edu/wiki/display/undergradProg/Transferring+Into+Undergraduate+Computer+Science+Majors+from+Other+UIUC+Departments
However, I’ll say that even with the tougher competition this year, I’ll be shocked if he doesn’t get in to at least Math&CS.
@PupleTitan What is your relationship/affiliation with UIUC? What is the basis of your responses in this thread?
@IlliniDad18, no relationship. I’ve reading stuff online and looked at results threads from last year.
