Engineering Applicant

Hey, so I applied to the University of Texas at Austin and got in through automatic admissions (Texas Resident) and am waiting on Chemical Engineering decision. I would like to know how much of a chance I have for either Chemical Engineering or my 2nd choice, Aerospace Engineering. Here are some of my stats:

Rank: 21/473 (top 4.4%)
SAT: 1890, (620 - CR), (630 - Math), (640 - Writing)
ACT: 30, (29 - English), (31 - Math), (28 - Reading), (30 - Science)
Cumulative GPA: 5.074
12 AP classes:
WHAP, Comp Sci A, Chemistry, APUSH, English Lang, Stat, Calc BC, Physics C, Econ, Gov, Biology, English Lit
I have never made below an A in any of these classes for the semester except for Calc BC in which I made an 87 the first semester of this senior year.

Some Extracurricular Activities:
Secretary of Red Cross
Leader position of Habitat for Humanity
Volunteering at local elderly rehab center
Soccer for 3 years of high school

Description:
My transcript has a positive trend as all my grades have increased substantially every semester. I have always gone up in ranking: 47 Freshman, 27 Sophomore, 21 Junior. I'm really hoping the Cockrell admissions process isn't based entirely on standardized exam scores because mine aren't on the high ground. I'm just nervous because I haven't heard anything from them yet :/ Please let me know how much of a chance I have!

Your test scores are below average for Cockrell but I’m pretty sure they look at the other aspects of your application too. Let’s hope there is something in there that really catches their eyes.

@goldtx thank you for the response. Are you sure my ACT test score is below average for Cockrell? I think on their website it showed the average to be 29-32, I could be mistaken

For Engineering: average SAT 2025, average ACT 31.

[2012 SAT/ACT Scores | Be a Longhorn](http://bealonghorn.utexas.edu/whyut/profile/scores)

Keep in mind, however, that these are the average scores of enrollees. This means that people actually got accepted with higher AND lower scores as well.

I guess I checked the wrong place, sorry! But thanks for the link. Darn, things aren’t looking very good for me then :/

Well that makes me feel better :)

Registered just to respond to this topic. Don’t get so hung up over your SAT scores, because mine is lower as a total. Hopefully the rest of your application looks great.

Here are the stats that got me into Cockrell (for Aerospace though) about a week ago. I submitted my application the day of the deadline.

Rank: 4/698
SAT: 1740, (540 - CR), (690 - Math), (510 - Writing)
I don’t know how GPA is done at my school so I’ll just list them all from my transcript:
GP4 Non Weighted GPA: 4.0000
ACA Weighted GPA: 13.4615

6~ AP classes:
World History (4/5), Macroeconomics, Physics C, AB Calculus, Government, English Lit
I’ve also tested for:
US History (3/5) and English Lang (2/5)

If it matters, I’ve also taken IB for a year and quit, but it includes 7 other classes that are considered honors level.

My Extracurricular Activities:
3 Years of Key Club (secretary representative for one year)
2 Years of UIL Mathematics (captain for one year)
2 Years of Technology Student Association (won first at state, national finalists)
2 Years of National Honor Society
1 Year of Tennis (left this year)
1 Year of Robotics Club (won 3rd at a local competition for beginner maze)

This year:
Future Business Leaders of America
Academic Decathlon (3rd on the Honor’s squad)

As for my essays… I wouldn’t say that my writing is my strong point. I’ve said this numerous times, but I’ve been told otherwise by some teachers.

@megamanzen thanks for the reply and I appreciate you posting your stats. Well it looks like the admissions is not based on only standardized exam scores. However your outstanding rank and gpa were probably the factors that got you in. That and all those extracurricular activities. I did participate in quite a few activities myself but the only clubs I ever held positions in were American Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity. As for essay and recommendation letters, I believe I have a strong point on both (but that’s what they all say xD). Anyways, hopefully I make it into Cockrell because if not, things may get pricey (Purdue).
